Ok, I have read the last 10 pages I promise...

Did a few mailers 6 months ago then stopped, haven't been paying much attention. Had a BIZ AA card opened this year, got bonus and closed a few months ago. Today got emailer for 75kmiles/5k spend/5months from AA. Open in incognito - 9 digit code prefilled and thats it. Enter my last name, takes me to page nothing filled out. Has 48 month language at top. Offer expires 12/11/19

will this work?

It will not. Some emailers have 48-month language (although it may be hidden somewhere) and they do not bypass that language.

Normally Name, Address, and AA number are filled out when you get the application page and there should be no 48-month language at the top.

Same for me. I have 1 account getting an offer, but only because I just redeemed some
miles, it seems.

One of my new accounts was opened @2 months ago, the other @one month ago. Neither has any activity other than just registering. Both got emailers yesterday.

My 2 long term accounts that used to get mailers haven't gotten anything since the last mailers in late July.

Hey All - for those of you getting the emailers I have a couple questions:

1. Which of your communication preferences needs to be 'checked'? (1. AAdvantage promotions, 2. News and Offers and/or 3. Third-party sharing)?
2. Identifiable verbiage in EVERY email? i.e. are they from the same email address? or every email has the same text - EXAMPLE: "Use this exclusive AAdvantage application number" - what are those phrases or email addresses?
I want to filter and flag email with this "common text" so I will notice them (I get hundreds of emails daily) - I am particularly interested in both personal and business application emails.

Thank you!!

I think almost all of the emails mention "invitation" or "invitation number". That's what they call the 9 digit codes. That's as close to foolproof as I can come up with, but it's not 100%.

Can you still chat to match to the 60k public? If you get a 50k emailer

No that ended long ago.

To be clear. I’m asking if I can chat or call, not SM

You can try and chat; recent data points were not promising, in other words... it didn't work, but you can try chat, they might tell you they will put a request on your behalf, then you will get a letter in the mail, odds are the letter will deny your request, but you might get lucky and find a CSR who would approve you, so there is nothing to lose.

About 3-4 months ago Citi stopped matching offers unless you provided front and back of the offer that YOU were solicited for. It does not matter how you contact them, all requests are forwarded and denied.

Ugh. Last app was 10/13; hope the 12/11 expiration date gives me enough time to get two applications in!

wiivile Nov 11, 2019 6:22 am

i am going to put this in big capital letters so nobody else makes the same mistake i did:

THESE NEW 12/11 EXP EMAILERS ACTUALLY EXPIRE AT 11:59PM EST ON 12/10.

12/11 is 59 days, it won't work for your 2nd app.

I am in a similar but slightly better situation. My last 2 apps are on 10/11 and 11/9. Per my calculations, with 10/11 as day 1, I can apply on 12/10 which would be day 61. I aim for at least 65 days but does not seem possible here. Also be careful about applying on the last day. I learned the hard way last week that last day to apply with these emailers is one day before offer expiration date.

SPLP007 Nov 11, 2019 12:37 pm

I opened two new ff numbers and new e/m's for each ff number -- I received invites in Oct and applied and approved ---in same two e/m received Nov invites ( Nov invites also used and approved )--

my question --have others had the same experience that they get invites multi times with same e/m and f.f. numbers even though used the invites ?--- if yes for how many months did/do they still keep sending invites

Another example of Citi being Citi. Imagine being a non-churner and being interested in responding to such an offer, then you apply on the last day the e-mailer says you can apply, only to find out that - nope - December 11th really means December 10th.

NRamos0330 Nov 11, 2019 4:25 pm

I'm curious, for those that church with citi AA, when the cc company asks you why you have so many citi cards recently opened, what is your general response?

seasidesilva Nov 11, 2019 4:27 pm

Today, I called to close a Biz card, (opened Jun 2019) and was offered: spend $1,000 in 1 cycle; earn 1,000 bonus miles in that cycle, for up to 9 cycles.

It's been a long time since I was offered a bonus for not closing. Although, for 9,000 miles, I'd rather get waterboarded than drag it out for 9 months like that.

Using emailers does not seem to stop them from coming to that account.

I have never been asked in 7+ years, even when having 5+ identical cards. Often a CSR will comment on it like I must be a great customer. I have a hard time disagreeing.

GrantUSMC Nov 12, 2019 10:05 am

anyone know the subject line for these emails? I know I had one that expired in November, but I can't find it in my gmail (been searching all morning). ugh!

The OFFICIAL answer, which I have used multiple times (yes, I did trade mark it, but you have my permission to use it all you want) is:

"Because it's such a great card" ! :p

Trust me, Citi CSRs have no answer for that. What are they going to say? No it's not? ;)

Rarely I've been asked that, over the years. And the first time, before I figured out the above response, the CSR, apparently talking to himself, said "you probably just want another sign up bonus..approved". :)

"I'm a collector."

"I'm a Citi AAdvantage card aficionado."

"My wife keeps insisting I get an updated card."

They laugh. We all know what's going on. They say congrats you're approved.

As an additional data point, based on todays CRS call about my app 2 days ago, apparently you won't get auto approved unless you enter your SS# correctly. :p

Took about 5 minutes for the CSR to change it on the app, and then get it approved. I also forgot to lower my $16,500 CL on my previous card, which hasn't even gotten here yet, so this time I only was approved for $12,500. TCCL was @$36K before this last app.

chat working for any of you guys? I keep getting a "Go back to the previous page or log in to continue your conversation" message when I'm clearly logged in.

venkallu Nov 13, 2019 8:49 am

I had the same issue with my spouces account for the last 2 months so have to call to cancel/reduce credit limit. My account does not have that issue. not sure how to go around that.

Have you tried (1) opening the session on an Incognito or Private browser window? (2) Using an entirely unrelated browser?

I reduced credit lines and cancelled an AA card via chat earlier this week

Have the same issue with various browsers. Started about 3 months ago for me and last month for my wife.

Weird. Still the case for me, days later. I had to cancel/reduce CLs on several cards the old fashioned way - call.

I've put a note in the wiki, emphasizing this Citi quirk, under "How Mailers Work".

Quick question - how many open Citi cards can you have open before you are at risk on not getting approved? for new ones? I currently have 9 open right now. I only close them when the annual fee hits?

I don't think the issue is the number of open cards. I think it's how much credit Citi is willing to give you and how much of that is locked up. I don't recall what the minimum CL is right now on these cards. $2,000? 9 x $2,000 is $18,000. Will Citi extend a lot more credit to you than that? What limits did they give you on cards 7, 8 and 9? If you are still getting high credit limits, you might be OK, but if the last card or two had a small limit, you might be pressing your luck applying for more without closing any.

Its not totally a question of the number of cards, its about the MAC (maximum allowable credit) Citi will extend to a customer. And that amount is different between each customer due to their income, credit score, etc. Numerous individual techniques about managing MAC are discussed in these Citi/AA threads. I think if you read through the wiki on how the game works and this thread (or other annual Citi/AA threads) there are several posts from people describing how many cards they have, how often they are (were) applying, how they manage(d) MAC.

mia Nov 15, 2019 2:11 pm

As used in this forum MAC refers to Multiple Applications for Credit, and seems to be a measure of application velocity rather than credit exposure.
