The app-o-rama worked when there was a lag between the time an application was submitted and when the Inquiry appeared on our credit reports. Now, the Inquiries appear in real time, and the concept is obsolete "unless" the issuer is looking at Accounts Opened rather than Inquiries.

Some issuers have also started to look at inactive accounts as a flag for applicants who open accounts primarily to earn the new account bonus.

If thats the current policy then I will simply delete Citi cards from my portfolio. Plenty of issuers who are happy to collect my AF every year for doing zippo.

Well, maybe that's actually the problem. I have plenty of cards with no activity on them, but Citi never denies me any card, because for years I've had one or more Citi cards with routine spending on it. I never cancelled every Citi card I had before applying for a new one. So perhaps they only look at this if you don't have Citi cards you do spending on?

As mia mentioned above, some banks are starting to look at no spend as meaning you're getting cards simply for the signup bonus, and are worried that you'll do the same (no spend) with the card you're applying for. But if you're applying at has recent spend experience with you themselves, they're less likely to care what you spend or don't spend at other banks.

I was denied for the Premier yesterday due to "too much unused credit." The recon rep indicated that they were looking across all issuers. If I remember correctly, credit reports show how much of your credit limit you're using on any given card, so Citi can see it when they pull those. It makes sense that they're looking at other issuers, because I have 3 citi cards (one over 20 years old), and they get used every month.

Also surprising was that she was able to see how many cards I've opened in the last 7 years. I've only opened 2 in the past 2 years, and only have a few open accounts, so I wasn't expecting number of accounts to be an issue.

It's too bad, too. I was going to be putting a lot of spend on this card.

Citi may not see if I pay a Chase card down some ahead of its statement date. Credit bureaus have a habit of viewing an account dormant if its paid down fully like that.

I’ve probably gotten 10 emails and 3 mailers regarding upgrading my Rewards Plus to a Premier but they’re only offering me a 1 year annual fee waiver. Does Citi ever offer points for upgrading?

I was denied today for a Citi Premier. I was initially rather shocked, but after reading some of this thread, its probably because of too much unused credit. I'm not going to call them, but I am going to check my credit report in case something weird is going on.

If Citis reason is unused credit, ask how its known.

Was seriously considering this card as Citi is the biggest hole in our portfolio. But after reading this thread I decided the better course was for P2 apply to a Cap1 Venture which was pre-approved and then instant-approved.

Lack of transparency by Citi makes it hard to justify a hard pull if the result is equivalent to rolling the dice. While hard pull on your report does less damage than new personal card (the latter counts against 5/24, etc.) the hard pull is still problematic as it may cause other issuers to reject subsequent apps due to app-o-rama concerns.

The Citi pre-approval page only shows me the Double Cash card, which is useless without the Premier. So I guess I'll be working another suitor.

That's a good suggestion. I had a large 0% BT offer on my CitiAA card which I just paid off. But maybe I should ring up a few charges before applying for another Citi product. That said I got a CitiBiz card 18 months ago, so I must not be completely disqualified

Citi Premier SUB 24 months after closing card?

From reading threads and sites, Citi makes you ineligible for their SUB if you've closed your account in the "past 24 months". Is this based on calendar dates (Dec 1st 2020 to Dec 2nd, 2022) or more broad (Dec 2020 to Dec 2022)?

I created a
Citi Premier card in Oct 2019. Since it was years ago, I can't find when the SUB posted (perhaps late 2019 or very early 2020). Also, I closed this card on 12/2/20. So using calendar dates (the latest is 12/2/20), I think I'm ok to re-apply for the Premier and get the 80K SUB?

Prestige earns 5x for Booking and Expedia, so Premier should earn 3x.
