FAQ on the Costco Anywhere Visa card: Your Costco Credit Card Account is Being Replaced by Citi

Transition date was June 20, 2016.

- 4% back on gas (up to $7k per year) (Gas at supermarket branded gas stations and warehouse gas stations other than Costco does not qualify.)
- 3% back on travel & dining
- 2% back at Costco and Costco.com
- 1% back elsewhere

From the Citi Costco Site:
Will my Costco Anywhere Card have foreign purchase transaction fees?
Yes. A fee of 3% of the amount of the transaction in US Dollars will be applied to purchases made in a currency other than US Dollars.
There are no foreign transaction fees for purchases made at Costco warehouses worldwide when you pay with your new Costco Anywhere Card.
Please note: not all international Costco warehouse locations accept Visa cards.

Announced 3/1/2018: There will be no foreign purchase transaction fees.

Extended warranty benefit removed for purchases after January 21, 2023.

Looks like it will become my "gas card" unless I get the 5% promo elsewhere.

It will be a while.

Given the massive number of the transition and Citi's reputation in screwing up transition (such as switching to EMV ATM cards), my fair guess is this card will not accept new apps until 2017, even it will be available in 2016.

You must be able to qualify for a credit card in the U.S.

Per Costco's policy, as the membership can be used worldwide, I don't see why you can't apply. However, it may be more complicated if you already have a Costco co-branded credit card, such as the one from Cathay United Bank (I assume you are from Taiwan per your last name).

If Citi buys this large of an account and can't take new apps until 2017, that would be a major blunder.

I really, really doubt it will be that long.

I am not saying that I am correct. But objectively, many facts support my estimate.

1. This conversion is one of the largest in the history of credit cards, given Costco's contribution to AMEX's revenue (Note - AMEX did not only profit from Costco from payment processing).

2. This conversion is time-sensitive.

3. Citi's screw up in this conversion will delay new apps.

4. Last but not the least, there is no urgency for Citi to have new apps.

(bolding mine)

I don't understand #4. That has to be a large part of the point of this acquisition for Citi.

The situation of Costco is in the contrary.

1. Only Costco members can apply for the card.

So the maximum number of accounts = the number of Costco members.

2. Majority of Costco members have the AMEX Costco cards (2 versions).

In short - the existing clientele is more important than new app.

I'd bet that one will be able to apply for the new card n the first day it is to be accepted at Costco. I can't imagine Citi waiting at all for any reason. They may have some hiccups during transition but that's not going to stop them from trying to acquire more accounts as soon as they can.

I see Warehouse Clubs are a chase 5% bonus category for 2nd quarter. Too bad we'll only have 10 days to use it at Costco. Hopefully it's a category again next year.

The Freedom card has the warehouse club bonus for Q2,but since it's a MC, it cannot be used at Costco. I am awaiting a response from Chase if online purchases are eligible for the bonus.

I was mistaken-Freedom is a Visa

The freedom card is a Visa not a MC. Sam's started accepting visa on February 1, so they now accept AE, Visa, MC and Discover so Costco must be getting a really sweet deal with Citi to accept only Visa.
