Which websites qualify for 3X points?

3 ThankYou Points for each $1 spent on purchases made at eligible retail (including department store websites, specialty store websites, warehouse store websites and boutique websites) and travel websites (including online travel agencies, and hotel and airline websites).

3 ThankYou Points for each $1 spent on products and services purchased directly from AT&T, including payment of monthly phone, cable or internet bills.

You'll earn an Anniversary Bonus of 10,000 ThankYou Points after you spend $10,000 in purchases in the prior cardmembership year.

Special note about eBay and PayPal - varies widely as to whether the bonus points are awarded. It seems to vary depending on merchant with no real discernible pattern.
(Ref, Ref, Ref, Ref, Ref, Ref, Ref, Ref, Ref)

Certain Non-Qualifying Purchases. You won’t earn 3X Points for purchases of and payments for medical services, insurance, taxes and government services, real estate, real estate rentals, purchases or reloading of prepaid or gift cards, education, charities and utilities.
You won’t earn 3X Points for purchases from independent wireless dealers, non-AT&T-owned stores, or AT&T resellers unless you are paying for an AT&T service, such as your phone, cable or internet.
(Effective 9/22/2019)

All payments coding as online are hit and miss. Sometimes it codes as online, sometimes it doesn't. YMMV.

It is normal for Citi to show the offer on the landing page, rather than the application page. The application page does refer to the offer:

Phone Offer is not available if you have had an AT&T Access More Card account that was opened or closed in the past 24 months

I have few questions to members: I am using t-mobile and dont want to change carriers. My friend on ATT has agreed to add second line for me for a month. I am planning to unlock iPhone and start using it with T-Mobile.

Will this work or do you see any challenges with my approach. I am especially worried about using my credit card details when I go buy my phone and the service which dont match.

Anyone with similar/same experiences share their advice?

The deal is for new AT&T customers. A new line on someone else's account might not — and probably wouldn't — qualify, especially if the account is under a different last name/address/etc.

I noted something very interesting.
Amazon purchase gave 3 points as usual, but the return only took 1 point back.

Right, the promo applies to a new or existing line of service, not just to the phone purchase. Throwing the phone onto someone else's account for 15 days seems unlikely to trigger the rebate.

Why not? You're going through their account to add a phone to their existing service. As previously ascertained, actually opening the box and putting the sim into the phone is unnecessary.

Activating the purchased phone isn't necessary; having an AT&T line plainly is.

Thanks, kdm31091! Once I reached the next point cutoff I requested a check and got the full 1%. They certainly do hide this option well on the website! But there's no need to hunt down the answer when you have the knowledge of thousands of FT'ers at your disposal.

A. Do not turn on the phone or activate the SIM
B. Submit an AT&T unlock request as a “Non-AT&T Mobility Customer” via https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/
C. You'll receive a verification email within a few minutes. You must click on the link in this email for your request to be processed.
D. Wait up to 24 (sometimes up to 48) hours. You'll receive a second email, saying "Congratulations! Here are your unlock instructions:". Follow these instructions. Some phones will have an actual unlock code, some will not.

The general consensus seems to be that you can power on the phone (without the AT&T SIM card in it) after step C, and begin installing apps, updates, etc. If you want to be extra cautious, you can wait until after you actually receive the unlock confirmation.

OK. Looks like I messed up step B where I was supposed to submit as Non-AT&T customer. I submitted as AT&T customer after which it asked me my AT&T phone number. I entered the phone number that is given to me in the order number. Am I screwed here? It did give me a request number. Status check first said "In Progress" and now it says "inqueue.progress" Do I need to be worried or just sit and wait?

It came through as "Novelty Stores", and there were so many purchases that I could not tell if it was 3x, so I called. The CSR I spoke with was totally confused by what I was asking, and in the end I could tell that he didn't have a way to figure out if it was 3x or not. At one point he was adding things up on a piece of paper to try to figure it out... He stopped after about 2 minutes and gave up and just credited the difference. He also said the purchase did not come across as being an online purchase.

My spreadsheet was off by about 16 points no matter what method I used- rounding down/up before the multiplier, after, etc. I think I read that they round the purchase down to the nearest dollar, so I'm assuming the 3x would be applied to that. In my case I think I figured the rounding "cheated" me out of 134 points. Not gonna complain, but kind of lame, they should calculate using fractions and then round down the total. Obviously they are trying some Office Space type of scam here.

At one point he was adding things up on a piece of paper to try to figure it out... He stopped after about 2 minutes and gave up and just credited the difference. No, they sum up all eligible purchases, then multiply it by 3.
