Citi Prestige - Churning the $250 Airline Credit

I applied for and received a prestige card in the July of 2015. I paid the annual fee, got the 50,000 point bonus and used the $250 airline credit. Once January arrives and the airline credit resets I will use up the new $250 dollar credit. I will also have redeemed all my thank you points. Instead of paying the annual fee in the July of 2016 (and not getting another $250 airline credit until Jan 2017), can I cancel the card and then reapply for a new card with another $250 airline credit for 2016? I realize I won't get another 50,000 bonus points but if I can get another two years worth of airline credits for one annual fee it will still be worth it.

I did a search on this but was not able to find anything.

I'm not a churner, but I believe there's an 18-month rule. If so, July was probably the worst possible month in which to get the Prestige, since 18 months would put you in January rather than December.

I understand the 18 month language for churning for bonus.

However, can one be successfully approved repeatedly in the same year if one was not worried about getting the spend bonus?

Are you talking about getting a Prestige, using the $250, canceling the card, and then repeating the process? I'd be shocked if that worked, especially if subsequent app(s) went to manual review, which seems to happen more often than not with the Prestige in the first place.

Even beyond that, I don't see what the point would be? If you cancel card, and re-open a card, you'll have to pay the $450 AF again so without the 50k points, I don't see the value.

You seemed to see the value back on page 91 ...

Yes, all prestige applications include the 18 month rule.

I thought the 18 month rule only applied to when you are eligible for another signup bonus?

True. "Bonus ThankYou Points not available if you have had a Citi Prestige card opened or closed in the past 18 months."

I'm new to this card. I spent $250 in airfare already this year, my bill says "The credit will reset to $250 after your December 2015 billing cycle".

So, if I spend another $250 on January 1st, will it count for the 2016 credit?

Why not cancel your card in April or may and get it again 18 months later. You'd still get $250 for 2016 and would have 50,000 points instead of the $250 for 2015. Unless your plan is to churn multiple cards each year

I guess it comes down to is it worth an inquiry for $250 value.

Probably not until you've exhausted everything else.

A strategically timed inquiry at the end of year to get $500 value might be closer to worth it.

I suppose I could go that route but I do see some value in having the card beyond the $250 airline credit and the 50k points.
