What it is

Retention offers, generally speaking, are offers made by a card issuer when they believe you might close your card account.

The Process

In order to start the process, call the number on the back of the card and explain that you wish to cancel your card (because _________. If you provide a specific reason, AF, want to concentrate on cards with more miles, etc. they can focus on offers that meet your goals in calling).

Being vague and saying things like "I'm not sure I want this card," or "are there any offers for me to keep this card?" don't meet their threshold to make an offer until you use the "c" word in a declarative fashion. Just because you say you want to cancel does not mean that you have to.

You will generally be sent to a Retention Specialist who has a list of offers (or none) for each card based on your history with Citi, use of the card, etc. Offers may include statement credits, points, or a combination of both and are frequently linked to required spending or purchases on the card.

You can contact Citibank's Retention Department directly at 800-444-2568 and avoid the front line customer service reps. Directly calling retention appears to no longer work. Please report if you are able to get through.

Tips

Be aware that Retention Specialist are compensated based on the number/percent of card holders they can retain and to some extent based on the offers they use. These are people with jobs who can be helpful but have little discretion in what is available although some discretion in which offers they tell you about.

Unless the Retention Specialist is being a complete &#*@%, you should probably accept an offer and then close via SM so that you don't ding the rep for something over which they have little control. You can ask the same rep about multiple cards of different varieties, even AA and HHonors, although personal and business cards are handled by different groups.

Some reps will tell you all available offers, others with offer you the one that seems to best fit what you requested, others will offer the least lucrative first and then wait. So, vven if you like a specific offer, it is probably worth saying, "I like that but are there any other offers?" to see if there is something better or something that can be added. They will not waive the AF but will often give you a statement credit that covers or partially covers the fee.

For additional tips on interacting with retention representatives, see this blog post by someone who claims to have worked for Citi's retention department.

For older reports see Citi retention offer reports [2009-2013].

I got the same offer today. Specialist also mentioned that starting in November there will be no foreign transaction fees on the AA Platinum. Not sure if I misunderstood or not.

One of the reasons i dont use this card so often is because of the foreign transaction fees ( i always end using my IHG, MARRIOTT, OR UNITED credit cards that have zero transaction fees.

I also caaled today to cancel my AA CITI PLATINUM and after saying that i didnt want to pay for the annual fee i got this offer: $95 statement credit after spending $95 within 2 billing cycles plus 1K extra miles per $1K for the next 16 cycles. Took the offer and kept it open.

Yikes! Had DH call to cancel AA Plat card due to annual fee. Closed right away..so fast that 'we' had to say..hold on - I need to make sure I really want to close this, due to my AA miles possibly expiring.
She said she backed the closure out and it is still open, but no hard pull right? And the 18 month clock is not reset?

Citi AA Exec:
I've had the card for one year and my annual fee will likely post tonight. I called in to convert the card to the double cash and the (very nice) woman said that they were temp. not allowing conversions because the TOS for the card were being redone and I would be allow to convert it on Nov 2. She said they have had multiple people who wanted to convert and told me that they were taking this into account. She told me to go ahead and pay the 450 and that when I call to convert on Nov 2 than I can still be refunded the fee even though it would be past the normal time frame of refunding it. I made sure to get her name and ensure the call was being recorded so that i could refer back to it if i needed it. has anyone else encountered this when trying to convert the citi exec lately? She said she made note on my profile that I called to ensure that i feel into their "exception" for converting and still getting refunded the fee. Just wanna make sure she is not crazy lol.

AA World Elite MC

I'd posted previously that I received a statement with the annual fee posted for my Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select World Elite MC, I called multiple times but was always told there were no offers (and the reps were surprised there were none). I just called one last time, ready to close as it was the statement due date, and this time there were three offers to choose from:
  • $95 statement credit after spending $95
  • 7,500 bonus miles after spending $3,000 within three billing cycles
  • Two AAdmiral's Club passes after spending some small ammount (forgot the exact terms)

I was surprised that the usual offer I get of 1,000 bonus miles for each of the next 16 cycles in which I spend $1,000 was not available, but took the 7,500 bonus mile offer. That's about 1.2 cents per mile.

This is correct. No FTF as of November 15. Got the email about it tonight.

Yes, they're changing some of their T&C for multiple cards - I know several of us got the same story on our Platinum cards over the past few weeks, and I got a letter in the mail confirming those changes a week or two ago.

Also, they don't really advertise it, but if you convert a card after the AF has posted, they do give you a prorated refund of your AF. It's not as good as the full refund (which you should still get, of course), but it's nice to know that this backup is there.

Do you mean multiple cards of the same type (e.g., multiple AA Exec cards) or multiple cards of different types (e.g., AA WE + AA Exec)?

What sorts of changes are they making for those with multiple cards?

When I called in yesterday to see about offers on my Citi Executive-- and didn't get any good ones- I tried to downgrade. I was told it wasn't being allowed until November because they were switching from MC to Visa.

I think you may have misunderstood - the changes aren't for people with multiple cards. The changes they make are affecting multiple types of cards. Perhaps it would be better phrased if I had said "these changes are affecting several different types of cards."

The changes are things like increased fees for returned (bounced) checks, stuff like that. Nothing that should have any real affect on us, or any other responsible CC users.

Similar experience here - this appears to be the standard offer (and has been for a while)...

Citi AA Platinum Select World Elite MC
This card was a recent replacement (with chip) for an older Citi AAdvantage Platinum Visa card I've had for 2-3 years. I have put (literally) no spending on the card for the past 6-12 months. Little the year before. Pretty minimum since meeting the min spend 2 years ago.

AF due tomorrow, I called, said I was thinking of closing the card, but before making that decision I wanted to call and see if they had any incentive they could give me to keep it and use it, asked for a retention specialist. First agent said she would need to "start the closure process" first before handing me to retention. I told her I was not ready to close the card yet, wanted to talk with retention first, so it was OK to start the closure process as long as the process was not complete - she confirmed the card would not be closed yet. Handed me to retention.

I explained my reasons to the retention agent (I had shifted my spend to other cards where I earned more miles, and couldn't justify the AF anymore). She gave me the standard offer without any friction:
  • $95 statement credit if I spend $95 within the next 2 cycles
  • 1000 bonus miles for every cycle in which I spend at least $1000, for the next 16 cycles

That's exactly what I was looking for. Thanked her. Off I go to start spending money...

Had to ask for retentions
