I don't think the amount one pays has anything to do with whether one gets points. To receive points, the reservation needs to be made directly through choice hotels; the only 3rd party channels I know are airline websites.

It does depend on the rate and the hotels set the rate at which points are allowed, for my property I work at... it has to be $64.99 + tax or more to get points.

Also, there are alot of 3rd party sites that you can get points from... with the exception of sites such as priceline.

I booked directly with the hotel since I was having problems with their website.

I think you would be correct to day there are no rates offered on the public Choice Hotels site which do not earn points. Reservations made by bid sites such as priceline often don't earn points, both here at Choice and elsewhere.

I always make a point to pick up a business card from the hotel on the first stay. It's alwas cheaper to make subsequent reservations directly.

I am not sure if you are right but certainly that is an interesting observation. I wish if we can confirm to figure out what is the best way to earn cheapest rate that can also earn points.

jwhuffman (or anyone else knowledgeable):

Do you know if every booking on the Choice Hotels website will earn points/miles, even if a group discount ID, etc is used ?

If not, is there any alert to the customer before completing the booking that a selected rate (eg, one priced less than the minimum at your hotel) will not earn points ... or does the customer discover this only upon checkin or checkout at the property ?

TIA.

I applied for Choice privileges visa credit card and received 16000 bonus points today and first statement was closed yesterday. These points will come handy as I have two stays coming up early october. So far so good with this program.
