One night short of Platinum - yea or nay on a mattress run?
So according to the website, the two differences in Gold vs Platinum statuses are 15% vs 25% bonus points earn and luggage tags. My 2018 nights were award stays or sub-$100 per night, so the extra 10% bonus points doesn't seem like enough of an incentive. The opportunity for room upgrades doesn't apply to most of the basic no-frills properties I stay.
https://www.choicehotels.com/choice-...bership-levels I'm leaning heavily toward no mattress run. Should I spend $65-$75 all-in in the next four days to cross the finish line? WWYD? TIA. |
I agree, last year due to health issues I was one day short with 3 weeks left in the year and ended up not doing it. It was the measly 10% and now that any level of status gets the same window for booking point stays I saw no reason to get one more night.
This year I just made Plat last week (health is better but not traveling as much) and if I didn't I wasn't going to sweat it or make a run. So that is what I have done (WIHD??) |
I can't imagine why you would do a mattress run to get status at Choice. The only reason is so that you feel good about your status. You cannot possibly make enough in points to offset your non necessary night, even if you find some Econolodge at $35 a night.

Don't do it - I love the program, don't get me wrong, but anything above Gold status is pretty much pointless. Other than the extra 15% bonus points, and luggage tags that you will probably never get (they never sent them to me when I made Platinum), there is zero difference in benefits between Gold and Platinum. And like lougord said, that extra 15% in points you'll earn in a year of stays isn't going to come anywhere close to compensating you for room you booked to achieve status.
Now, if you want to have a nice night out for New Year's Eve or something, that might be a good excuse for one more stay... |
Thanks to each of you for validating my feeling it isn't worth it.

https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/choi...ng-window.html I now see no reason to "pursue" any particular elite status level with Choice. I just stay (1 night at a time) to max out any "stay 2 times, earn 8000 points" promos I can max out "naturally", and take whatever status that gets me. The extra points you earn from status pale anyway, compared to the big points you earn if you stay 1 night at a time during "stay 2 times, earn 8000 points" promos. The extra points you get from status mostly matter if you have to do your stays in ways that doesn't earn you much from the promo (either long stays, or stays outside those promo periods, or only 1 stay during each such promo period). |
