Make sure you are using Internet Explorer as the browser. This goes for any Chinese-based website. Few websites here are optimized for any other browser and that goes double for anything interactive where you need to place a booking or an order.

If using IE doesn't fix the problem, then likely it's a temporary technical glitch on the ctrip end because they are monkeying around with the site. They normally will be doing this during the wee hours of the morning China time, so compensate for whatever time zone you are in, and don't try to access during the wee hours of China time.

The English page and order functionality seems to be working fine now.

Ctrip et al seem to work OK (when they are working) in Chrome, which is my primary browser.

The airline websites come "closest to working" in IE. Older versions both of IE and of operating systems also seem to work better. Firefox mostly the same results as chrome.

I am glad to hear that they are not accepting paypal. We have had some issues using US credit cards.

I assume your not is supposed to be a now?

If I'm traveling after July 31 (after the promo), why would I ever use paypal on Ctrip if they tack on a 3% surcharge? I must be missing something.

Otherwise I'm better off using a cc that doesnt charge a foreign currency transaction charge (although I probably have to fax/scan my info).

There's a 3 % surcharge for paying with foreign credit cards as well. So it doesn't matter.

Ah, so using a foreign credit card or paypal will incur a 3% charge. I guess that is the cost of convenience.

C-trip has good service, On CZ flights, i use Amex-plat on C-trip and they charge the 3 % in the ticket, sometimes also pay rmb cash when they deliver a CZ ticket, (normally about 2 hours) and then no 3%.

Ok .. to avoid the 3 %, use Amex plat: 1- call air china for the flight, get the PRN #, & 2- then go to a air china booking office & use the Amex plat.
+ No 3 % foreign fees from Amex, you get 2 receipts, & sometimes the Air china flights are cheaper than on C-trip by a few rmb. The air china web site can be fluid with prices, especially at 9 am BJ time...

Ctrips never the cheapest....but i think it's the cheapest place that accepts foreign cards...i ised to go to the airport booking offices before i had a local card because ctrip was 100 rmb more and it irritated me...and i could pay in cash...the chinese travel agencies that come up on qunar are always cheaper....

The airline offices don't charge cc fees, but the time and effort required to go to them is costlier than 3% with respect to most of the tickets FTers buy.

Ctrip / Elong flights - correlation between %discount and fare basis?

The UA website lists which fare basis accrues MP miles at which level, either 0%, 50% or 100% of miles flown based on the fare basis letter code of your fare. When booking on Ctrip and Elong, is there a way to see the fare basis letter code before your purchase or is there a way to map the % discount that they show to a particular fare basis letter code?

For CA full fare=Y discounted fares 10%=B 15%=M 20%=H 25%=K 30%=L 40%=Q 50%=G
The fare class is shown on the Chinese site.

Also, on the short flights, even the 50% fares, there is a 500 mile min post on MP miles.

Sometimes, i just call C-trip & ask for the class fare, if booking make sure your UA # is in their system.

This is the best way to determine what the fare class is, you can always call ctrip/elong as sometimes the latter sells discounted tickets on fare classes that are normally higher cost.
