Some Shanghai questions
For those of you who are really familiar with Shanghai, a couple of questions related to my August 30 trip:
1) In hot summer weather, do men wear shorts in the city, or should I stick to long slacks? 2) I was a little interested in shopping for a radio scanner capable of receiving digital broadcasts from police/fire here in the US. There are two or three available for sale in the states, and I understand they are made in China. Any idea of a market in Shanghai where I might look for such things? Or is this just too esoteric, country-specific or dicey to be looking for as a tourist? I've certainly seen transceivers in markets; just never seen any programmable scanners..... 3) Are there any good tailors you'd recommend, like in Hong Kong or Bangkok? (unlike the other cities, I haven't seen any recommended here). 4) Any recommendation for a good low-key jazz venue other than the Peace Hotel? I'm not thinking of a club scene, just someplace to chill out with music in the early evening, not too far from the LeMeridien or the Bund waterfront.... Thanks in advance for any pointers. |

Some comment to compliment moondog's excellent advice 1) In hot summer weather, do men wear shorts in the city, or should I stick to long slacks? if you don't have meetings or dress to impress obligations then better do as you like 2) I was a little interested in shopping for a radio scanner capable of receiving digital broadcasts from police/fire here in the US. Dunno 3) Are there any good tailors you'd recommend, like in Hong Kong or Bangkok? (unlike the other cities, I haven't seen any recommended here). I'd know some between Shanghai and Nanjing but not within city limits. 4) Any recommendation for a good low-key jazz venue other than the Peace Hotel? I'm not thinking of a club scene, just someplace to chill out with music in the early evening, not too far from the LeMeridien or the Bund waterfront.... How about the upstairs jazz bar at the FS? Thanks in advance for any pointers. |

Shanghai tailors

Tailoring here isn't up to what you'll get in HK or Bangkok. I've used Dave's Custom Tailors in the Shanghai center for shirts and minor alterations and was satisfied for these small jobs. No one I know has had a full suit made here- Hong Kong's usually the place for that.
Shanghai South Bund Soft-Spinning Material Market. (Fabric Market for short). There are three full floors of at least 50 shops each. Selling clothing materials, ready made jackets, ties, anything that you wear (even underwear but except condoms!) You can get a good bargain there. One OP walked in with 3900 RMB (Approx US$490) and came out with order of tailor made: 1) Overall Jacket (Cashmere) = 1000RMB 2) One set of Tuxedo (Suit and Pants) = 900 RMB 3) 4 shirts (2 X Tuxedo style, 2 X normal shirts) = 500 RMB 4) One waist length Leather Jacket (real leather) = 1200 RMB 5) 5 X Wool Scarves = 300RMB I think search will also get more detail information re other shops in the same Market....this topic has been discussed in past. |

Try this:
Shanghai South Bund Soft-Spinning Material Market. (Fabric Market for short). It is an interesting place to visit, however, and I've gotten some nice knock-off ties and other ready made stuff for gifts. They moved into a modern, air con building last year, so it's more pleasant to visit in the summer than in years past. |
1) Shorts generally mark you as a tourist, as Chinese do not wear shorts that frequently. Of course, you might already be marked as a tourist anyway.
2) Warranty problems, like is there one for US? Directions in what language? As moondog mentioned, knock-offs everywhere. They even have USB flash drives to work in a certain computer, but when you get home you find there is no accessable memory. Did I mention power and plug compatibility? Generally, better to stick to your home country for electronics. 3) Best advice I got, was to go to South Bund Soft-spinning Market and then look at the samples. When you find a suit you like, have them duplicate it in your size. I used Flora Zhang in 1F (1st Floor) No. 129. Nice fabric, decent quality, good price...under $100 for small size. 4) Can't help you with that. Have a great time. Always carry bottled water to relieve the dry-throat syndrome from the pollution. |
