Did Discover ever get that EMV D-PAS incompatibility problem solved? Its a pain in the butt to have them try a few times till it falls back.

There are also instances where the machine says to insert chip, but I've found that swiping has a higher chance of success.

Discover has not turned out to be the cure-all I had hoped for.

Simply put, Discover is no longer a panacea in China. You can argue the 银联 angle until the cows come home, but if the specific POS machine doesn't like your card, you can't use it. (This issue used to make my boss's blood boil, but all is good now since he has moved on to the "acceptance" phase.)

Ugh, I just got a Discover card hoping that it would be accepted at all UnionPay terminals, and now you're telling me it won't? So the only true solution to these UnionPay only merchants is to get a real UnionPay card?

How many of POS machines are there around China, and if a merchant has one POS that doesn't take Discover, can you often use the Discover in another one at the same merchant?

It's obviously a case by case thing, but IME you will strike out 20℅ of the time with Discover these days, and this is not something that can be cleared up with a phone call.

Regarding other 银联 accounts, I recommend Merchants and ICBC for foreigners because both can be connected to Tenpay/Alipay with passport numbers. Other banks are catching up, but I can guarantee that these two work.

ICBC's US division is set to start issuing UnionPay credit cards to US residents beginning this October... rumour mill says they'll also offer 1% cash back.

Remains to be seen how this will work in practice, but they'll apparently be marketing to people who regularly travel to China, and ultimately might allow some sort of international credit history transfer a la AMEX/HSBC.

Well, it was up. However it's "system error" when you apply...so much for ICBC's effort to pitch UnionPay.

Hmm...maybe I should just go to a local branch (fortunately, there are some branches within a 1 hour drive of my location). I was planning to wait until right before my next trip to China before applying though.

I just used the link, applied for it and got approved instantly. Thanks! I've selected the Unionpay 1% cashback with no annual fee, thinking I'll use it as a backup where Discover can't be used. Where I know they won't DCC, I still use my Chase Sapphire Reserve.

Also got an instant approval for the Preferred Gold Card. Will be interesting to see what kind of CL it turns up with.

HowieG Nov 29, 2016 3:19 pm

Instant approval

Said 10-15biz days for delivery.

Will see how it works in China, i.e. Link to Alipay, WeChat pay, using it at all the places where an American Visa were rejected, Discovery was hassled...

If it's as good as it sounded, will cancel my Discovery.

Fingers crossed.

any update on the icbc card(s)? the link shows that application is only available through their local branches.

Interesting that online applications seem to be dead now.

There's a bunch of updates over in this thread.

tl;dr: Reasonable CLs. Doesn't (generally) work for China-based online payments. Poor EMV acceptance and random issues in the US. Useful if you travel to China a lot and want to avoid DCC hassles/frequent places that don't accept non-UP cards, otherwise not worth it.
