Maglev gives you a 10RMB discount if you are a flying the same day you ride. Show the ticket agent your plane ticket or boarding pass stub.
Paper air tickets are common in China for domestic flights. In fact security will ask to see your ticket as well as your boarding pass and ID.

Hi,
I have just come back from Shanghai with a suitcase.
On arrival I went to the Hyatt hotel desk and they walked me to the taxi rank (130 RMB to the Hyatt).
On the return I took the taxi from the hotel to the Maglev Station (27RMB) then up the escalator to the Maglev. It is a bit of a hike from the Magelv terminal ti the Intl check in area ( with the luggage).
As we had a 6 hour delay I took the Maglev back and changed to the metro to go to Pudong for the oriental pearl tv tower and the Jin Mao tower ( I did not see too many gates suitable for baggage but there must be some) and the metro stations and trains can be busy ( ususally the front carriage of the train is quieter)
Some metro stations have a long walk to the exits.
Unless you have hand baggage only I would take the taxi from PVG to the airport and the taxi back to the Maglev ( or the airport as time wise esp if you just miss the maglev and have ot wait 15mins) is probably not that great.
Hovever the Maglev is fun to ride ( even if just ot sy you reached 430km per hour
Regards

So let me ask for just a little clarification that will more than likely make me red faced from sheer stupidty.
A taxi from PVG airport to the Westin on the Bund should be circa 150RMB?
And I'm guessing the smartest way to pay is to forget plastic, and use cash?
If anyone has stayed at the Westin, do they arrange transfers, and if so, how much did they charge?
Thanks for all your help....I'm sure it's a bit stupid, but it is late and I'm all out of caffeine.

Westin, like any hotel can arrange hotel transfer at premium price...I don't know exact amount but expect 3 or 4 times metered taxi.

I cannot answer specifically for the Westin, but all the big name hotels will arrange for airport pickup. If you want a car expect to pay about 500RMB which is usually added to your hotel bill, but MAY be due on arrival. Email the sales office at the Westin and they can give you the details.

When you arrive at PVG and exit customs, turn left and you will walk down a gauntlet of kiosks. There will be one for Westin down a ways, on the left I believe. Just tell them you have a reservation at the Westin and they will escort you to a taxi and give them instructions to take you to the Westin. Very simple and works well.

Instead of using a hotel car, I'd do as noted above and get the hotel desk past customs to write the name of the hotel on a piece of paper and then use that to take a regular taxi to the hotel.

As for ATMs, many major foreign banks have equity interests in Chinese banks right now. So, if your bank, like mine -- BofA, has a habit of charging sky high fees, then you'd be wise to figure out the partner bank (Construction Bank in the case of BofA). With Citibank and HSBC, this isn't really an issue because both have well marked ATMs of their own.

$185 Taxi fare from airport to hotel
$185 fare could seem believable as I once paid $160 from Heathrow to the
city center which is about half the distance than the Swede went.
POLICE in Pudong have detained a cab driver from a major taxi fleet for questions after he and two accomplices allegedly overcharged a Swedish man for a ride on Wednesday.
Christoph Johamnes arrived at Pudong International Airport early Wednesday morning for his first trip to Shanghai.
Two hawkers persuaded him to take a cab driven by the suspect, a man surnamed Cao.
When he arrived at his hotel, the trio charged him 1,480 yuan (US$185), claiming the fee included a 1,200-yuan taxi fare and a 280-yuan tax.
The 39-kilometer ride should only have cost around 110 yuan, according to Cao's employer Haibo taxi fleet.
Johamnes received an apology and 4,110 yuan in compensation from Haibo management yesterday.

About 3 months after I posted my tale about trying to call the phone number on my taxi driver's license, only to receive a voice mail informing me of obnoxious documentation requirements, a (Chinese) colleague of mine met some guests from the LAX flight (very early arrival). Due to her fatigue, she paid Y300 for a ride that should have come in under Y100. Several days later, she followed up with the dispatchers at the airport, who (having everything on tape) got her a favorable resolution in a jiffy (apparently, the driver had passed her a receipt that included x hours waiting time).

with fake documents...I was told that the compensation should be double the amount you were cheated out of plus the amount that the fare should have been. Sounds to me like there is almost a known standard amount you can get if you catch a cheater....simplified justice, I guess.

On extended business trip and instead of home, had to make quick trip to Shanghai for family funeral. Taiwan to shanghai - with delay in flight took me 12 hrs door to door.
Best part of the trip, plane touched down 7:25, walked through immigration, to Meglev, showed boarding pass, rmb40, train was about to leave when i jumped on, then taxi to xujiahui area (rmb45)...checked into 168 motel 8:30.
Take the maglev...it's a blast!

Due to circumstances I had to take the Maglev three times in a single day recently. It's not that bad for Pudong and even some areas along subway line 2 in Puxi. Taxi queues at Longyang Rd. were around 5-10 minutes.
Bought tickets for the "V.I.P" car which is only marginally more expensive and IMHO worth it as the trains seems to be getting very full nowadays. With more luggage it makes quite a difference in comfort.
Now, if they would only bother opening those "V.I.P" entrances to the train so that one doesn't have to run the entire length of the coaches to get into the right compartment
