Cheap sleep by CAN?
 

I'm doing NW in and out of CAN and CZ for the short hop to HAK. Timing of the flights is, of course, such that NW gets in after the last CZ to HAK has left for the night, and NW leaves in the morning before the first CZ from HAK comes in. So I've got nights at CAN in both directions.

Can any FTers recommend somewhere clean, safe, and cheap (US$60 or less) right by CAN? I don't need four-star, don't have time to go shopping, and am not interested in the local girls... just somewhere to put my bags down and sleep! :D

i actually had one of my best ever tout experiences in a similar situation there. ~y280, free shuttle, interesting neighborhood with nice people.

if you want to pinpoint the exact hotel (there can't be many), search for my 2005 thailand trip report; keywords would be: pek, nw, cz, bkk, miles, etc -- during may 05

in any event, it worked out really well, so i don't think you have much to worry about.

There is also a new Novotel at Baiyun airport - not sure when it is opening exactly - but should be soon. If you go to the accor site, they have the phone numbers of the hotel up already.

According to Moondog's trip report from last year, Moondog stayed at the Tianhong. I tried to find it, but kept coming up with Tianhongs in Beijing and Hangzhou and other places. :(

I don't know when the Novotel is opening either, Slickalick, but it isn't available the nights of the 9th or 17th, so maybe it's not opening yet!

I did spot a Best Western near Bai Yun airport that looked affordable...

very strange! i have to assume that it either no longer exists or it underwent some sort of name change /makeover.

in that case, here's how i'd proceed:

-book something on ctrip/elong, such as the Baiyun International Airport Hotel Guangzhou, for y238
-but, don't put down a credit card (ctrip doesn't ask for one; can't comment on elong)
-then, when you get to the arrivals lobby, head to one of the info desks and see if you can get anything better

what i liked about the hotel i stayed at, was it that it wasn't on the airport property (i.e. there was some stuff of interest in the immediate area)

the hotel i just pasted above, by contrast, appears to fall into the drab airport category.

I did this trip a year ago, flew through CAN on my way to the States on NW. I stayed at the "Good East Hotel". It is just a basic Chinese hotel, but was clean and friendly. They have a free shuttle too and from the airport, it is about a 5 minute ride or so. It is just off the grounds of the airport. I did not check out the surrounding area as I was just looking for a place to sleep. It is cheap, 180 rmb I think. I had no complaints.

Well, I got into CAN about midnight (bit of a delay at NRT while they replaced one of 3 "attitude indicators" in the cockpit to make sure we didn't fly upside down any ;) and after a bit of mucking around was able to get someone at a hotel info desk who knew the difference between "Best Western" and "Good East" and got over to the BW. Which turned out to be nowhere near the airport, despite what hotels.com said. On the other hand, hotels.com said it was 2-star, and it's actually 4-star. I don't think I'm going to believe hotels.com any more... and if I find myself heading this way on another trip, I will probably check out the "Good East" so I don't have to factor in a half-hour of taxi time!
