Travel between PEK and PVG
 

Hello All,
I would be taking a flight next year to China, just booked an open jaw flying into PEK and flying out of PVG. I would like to know if there is a website I could buy a one way air-fare between PEK and PVG. Also I did find asia.com where in China Eastern is quoting $143+ for the one way fare. Is this a good fare ?

The one-way fare is about 600 RMB or $80.

But, you could always buy one at PEK airport at any time because of frequent flights to PVG or SHA (Hongqiao Airport which is closer to downtown Shanghai).

There is also a site dedicated to expatriate air purchases.

They have English-speaking customer service (at least, they try) and their website is English.

I recommend flying Shanghai Airlines domestically. They're all terrible, but I've found that Shanghai Airlines is least bad.

Think about spending the extra money for Business Class...It's like a $100 add-on from a discounted fare--I think I paid about $200 in July. There is ZERO legroom in Y on Chinese planes...The on-the-ground service is much better than a US-domestic flight in F or C...You get lounge access (usually with decent food/drinks), there's a 'cheat line' for security, and I find the bags come out a heck of a lot faster too. The intangibles alone make it worth it.

I'd go with Air China. I don't have a good track history with Shanghai airlines. Plus, Air China runs some 777s and 747s on the SHA-PEK route--I had a nice seat on a nice plane in an EMPTY C-class cabin recently.

$143 is the full price, you can buy it at any time. In China, especially between these major cities, you can get big discounts. I assume you have several days in Beijing. Just ask the hotel agent to help you to book the flight when you get there.

Good advice. Just took 5 internal flights on Chinese airlines, all in coach. Average flight time was about 2 hours. Leg room was not bad, not good either. Everyone boards at once and overhead space is at a real premium so line up early. I'd not pay extra on a short flight for F or BC.

there are many, many threads on this topic, but here are my current thoughts:

-like tp-canuck, i used to hold shanghai airlines in high regard; they were my top pick..... but 40+ incompetantly handled delay hours later, i had to bump them down a few notches
-air china is my current favorite
-exit rows provide much more legroom than 2-class F and are pretty easy to snag if you ask nicely
-sometimes i pay for business class (in otherwise full y situations), but business is only offered on ~5 flights per day
-there's no point whatsoever in buying tickets way in advance (in fact, discounts aren't even available till ~45 days out)

depending on when you're flying, CA occasionally runs a 3-class 744 from PEK-SHA, and i've found it quite comfortable. ctrip.com will give the aircraft details for each flight scheduled across the major airlines.

Another alternative, if you have the time, is to take the train. "Soft sleeper" overnight trains between PEK and PVG take about 9 hours and cost about $50. You get a comfortable ride in a 4-person cabin with a decent bed and a private TV with headphones. The bathroom situation is lousy, but it's better than that on most trains. And you avoid having to travel to the two airports, both of which are fairly far from downtown.

if u fly on 777 or 747, you will have some leg room, but if you fly other type of plane, I agree post above, u have no leg room at all!

If you want to earn RDM, you can take CA or FM from PEK to PVG. Just make sure your MP number is on the BP.

the fastest trains do that route in 12 hours. i've never once seen any of the ptv/headphone setups that you speak of, but it's possible that this is a new (within past 6 weeks) enhancement. soft sleepers cost y476 for the top and y499 for the bottom (about $65 given current forex).

in response to the poster below, i've had a change of heart regarding the widebodies this year because my primary objective is to get there quickly and the 737s seem to be better at that (if nothing else, they are faster to load/unload). but, as i mentioned in my first post to this thread, comfort all comes down to one's ability to park himself in an exit row.

Few Z trains (not all of them, e.g. Z1, Z3, Z13, Z21) do have PTV/headphone in SoftSleeper cars.

Be aware: these nonstop Beijing-Shanghai trains generally depart between 7 pm-9 pm. Outside of this narrow window, your choices are limited.

Let me add that in China I often fly First Class because the fare is not too expensive.
