Shanghai closes knock off market, Xiangyang Road
|
I think China will start moving away from the fake business as its becoming
more and more easy to make legitimate money. Seems like XY market had a lot of cheap junk but the North Face jackets were very good quality and didn't fall apart. It was funny to see the foreign passengers in the check in line at Pudong airport wearing their fake North Face stuff. What did you bring back from your trip to China? Tea, Jade, Silk. Well ah...more like Prada, LV, Rolex :D |
Bummer!! I was planning a detour through Shanghai on my next trip to China to get my kids new North Face jackets!!

Glad I picked up my bootleg DVD of War of the Worlds before it closed. Too bad the only language it was in was Russian. All in all a real experience--and one thyat I am sure will simply move underground.

Actually it closed due to a $450 million offer for the land - although government claims Intellectual property rights as the reason - some shops are relocating to the Longhua area.

I don't advocate buying fake products but I understand the
vendors at XY market (legitimate ones included) moved now to Qipu Market as they finished construction on the new buildings in anticipation of the closing of XY market. A few years ago I went to Qipu market and the intersection outside the market I think I saw about 10,000 people in one intersection. It kind of looks like Times Square on NY's eve but every weekend of the year. |

Many traders and foreign tourists are turning their focus to another well-known market, the enormous Qipu Road complex which wholesales clothing, near Henan Road and Haining Road, north of the Suzhou Creek.
"Some vendors from Xiangyang Market have already negotiated and signed up to move here," said Shen Yizu, deputy manager of Qipu Road's Xingwang Market, one of the three multi-storey market buildings in the areaBut any ideas about selling fake goods should definitely be changed. Here we have our regulations and legal orientation. In addition, illegal hawkers such as those who prey on tourists around Xiangyang Market will not be permitted to exist here in Qipu," Shen claimed. More than 5,000 people visit Xiangyang Market on average every day, while the figure exceeds 10,000 at Qipu Road Market. |
