I've been using miles for most of my US-China plane tickets since COVID because cash fares are still much higher than they were in 2019 and earlier (so the return on miles is great). I usually book something (e.g PE or Y)
a month in advance, but 100% of the time, I've been able to score 70k business class seats on my ideal flights within 3-5 days of departure.

For Europe, the calculus is different, of course, because you guys get cheap revenue fares.

Have decided to not use the transit at Xi'An T5 and fly to PKX but stay the day in Xi'An and fly from Xi'An T2 to Tangshan at night, stay overnite in Tangshan, take the train to Beijing (it is only 90 minutes).
