China visa-free programme and passport six month validity requirement

Hi all,

I am a new joiner here. Thanks for all the information on this forum.
I am an EU passport holder. I am planning on visiting China (Beijing) for the first time in September, for 13 days.
On the positive side, the visa-free programme applies to me.
On the negative side, my passport expires in January 2025, ie in less than 6 months.

Would anybody know whether the passport six month validity requirement applies in my situation ?
Will this be checked by the airline (Cathay) and / or border agents?

Thanks a lot !

I think the 6-months doesn't apply.

This site states:

"3. The validity of the passport should be long enough to cover one’s stay in China. In some cases, it requires that the passport should be valid for at least 3 months or even longer."

From what I gather, for you it needs to be valid for the duration of the stay. Sorry, no official source though.

A random search has found a slightly more official source saying the passport needs only be valid for the length of stay.

Q4: Are there requirements for the type and validity of entry documents?
A4: Foreigners must hold valid ordinary passports with a validity period meeting their travel needs in China. Travel documents other than ordinary passports, such as travel certificates or temporary/emergency documents, are not eligible for visa exemption.
Ita unfortunate that the details on the various Chinese Embassy websites are minimal for the visa free system, but probably understandable as it's outside of their sphere of influence and they ultimately want to sell visas. But the page linked above on visaforchina is probably as good as it gets.

I just checked TIMATIC and it says:

Document Validity:

Passports and other documents accepted for entry must be valid for the period of intended stay.

There is no special requirement for visa-free entry so this should apply.

Thank you, all.
Really appreciated.

I actually checked TIMATIC when I first saw this thread too, and can confirm the same.

I'm actually surprised at this. I'm currently in China doing my second TWOV stay in 2 weeks on my Brazilian passport since my Swiss passport (visa free) expires in 5 months. I was also under the impression that TWOV required 3 month's validity. Since I am in China, though, I can't use Google search to find the sources.

Your impression was/is correct:

Most airline websites that offer TIMATIC views are not blocked in China.

TWOV is different from visa-free since it involves onward travel to a third country/region so it's more stringent. With visa-free, you could always return to your country of origin.

Hello, I am in a similar situation and would like to know if you were able to enter China. Thanks.

Note that an 'EU passport' is not enough description. There are quite a few different rules in play depending on the country you're traveling from in the EU.

Which EU visa waiver passport(s) is/are unique wrt remaining validity upon entry? In what cases does the country from which you enter impact this?

As of this minute, Denmark can for example not travel visa free. But e.g., France can travel visa free. Denmark is being added to the list though. The baltic countries are still not on the list.

The OP is presumably has a passport from a country that had a visa waiver in place when he started the thread. Otherwise, it wouldn't make any sense to ask us about the sub requirement... that TMK applies to every country in the fold. But, if you (or anyone else) know of any exceptions (i.e individual countries that have different requirements), please let us know.
