This is starting to get interesting now that AA (3) and DL (6, but possibly more?) have also attempted to stake claim to pieces of the (12-piece) pie from the new allocation.

Just upping frequencies on their current routes, though one of the Delta articles mentions LAX also. I predict the allocation will be UA 5, DL 4, and AA 3.

Only DLs PR mentioned it and its suppose to resume in January 2024, but it won't be a daily flight.

If UA only gets 5 more, they might go daily to PVG....but it won't leave many flights to PEK...ooofff....

Strange to me that it seems like there is no news out of the Chinese side they are getting 12 more slots too, divided among the big three, right? I would have thought they would have jumped on this.

According to Ben (can't recall his username here) in the wx group, so far, the following have been semi announced/filed

-CZ and MU each add 2 LAX

-CA adds 1 JFK and 1 LAX

I'm guessing MF will also add more LAX, HU might stake a claim to something, and that the full 12 will be settled by mid September.

On that note: is there a reason why HU can't do USA - Beijing? CA blocking that?

While I don't fully understand how CAAC divvies up route authorities, CA gets first dibs on flights from BJS to important markets, but others can go after the scraps (e.g. BOS, HNL, LAS, SJC).

Keep in mind AA says it is resuming flights in January 2024, not Q3 or Q4 2023, so probably not part of the current increases. But who knows, no one is bothering to publicly explain the allocation process on either side.

Very happy to see DL stepping up. Competition and supply keep a lid on prices.

I think it's possible that demand continue to exceed supply. Have you seen any evidence of prices dropping? I haven't and I just checked earlier today.

I've been wondering about that. I can't imagine the DOT would let them squat on slots for 2 months without using them.

Doubling capacity is unquestionably good for consumers. Doing so in a manner that doesn't give UA an oversized role is even better, BUT if only UA gets its act together during Q3, then so be it.

Step 2 in what may end being a 20-step process. Every little bit helps. UA resuming flights helps, but it helps even more when DL also steps up their flights.

Raimondo is in Beijing

Cross your fingers (and @moondog I would go for the toes as well, it can only help) one of the deliverables that comes out of this meeting is more flights between the US and China.
