2022 Winter Games in Beijing

Now that the curtain has fallen on the Tokyo games, attention is turned to the Beijing games.

The New York Times says venues are being redesigned, athlete interviews will take place behind plexiglass with microphones, etc. etc. etc.

What do you think? For those of you in and out of China, would you want to attend even if you can? The games are less than 6 months away but not much information is available.

When the Games end, practically everyone involved will be required to leave China or endure several weeks of total isolation in government-run quarantine centers, undergoing numerous medical tests, according to people familiar with Beijings preparations. That will include thousands of Chinese staff, who will have to live in the bubble throughout the Games and then re-enter the rest of China after a lengthy quarantine. No decision has been announced on vaccination requirements for participation in the Games, or on the shorter quarantines for people arriving for the Olympics from overseas.
Well, that sounds miserable. But then again that European bloke described in the article in the other thread has done quarantine 5x already so maybe some people enjoy it at this point.

Anyway, if one was in China and planning to leave that would be a good excuse to cap it off and leave for good

Haha, there have been many triggers over the last 2 years for this to happen for me. But I don't think the Olympics will impact daily life that much. Like the article said, it's going to be a huge bubble.

I also agree that this bubble's going to give Chinese athletes a big advantage in certain sports where competitors can't practice too much ahead of time.

I'm calling it now. The Winter Olympics are gonna suck. Lots of countries don't want them in China so there will be bad blood from the get go. China is gonna isolate the athletes to maintain "zero covid" which there will be constant complaints about by athletes and journalists. Those of us in China will not be allowed to attend any events and will have to deal with increased security and general BS leading up to the games. China's gonna be upset about something some other country's athletes say or do and upset because they aren't good at winter sports anyway.

They should just cancel them, but obviously that won't happen. I can't think of an event that is more set up to fail than this one.

Ok admittedly I was too lazy to watch the Tokyo Olympics. But from what I understand the athletes only had to do a 3 day quarantine.

Doesnt this put Chinese athletes at a massive advantage? Dont think you can do any reasonable workouts in a hotel room for three weeks.

Why, yes it does! Imagine not being able to arrive early enough to practice on the luge track whereas the Chinese athletes can go whenever they want. Luge medals anyone?

Also this might make some elite athletes not willing to come (think NHL). This happened in baseball in Tokyo where the US fielded a team of minor leaguers and lost to Japan.

Now as for boycotts - my view is they won't materialize. The US and UK are talking about not sending anyone senior to the ceremonies, but the athletes will still attend. The US will send Kamala Harris' husband to the Tokyo Paralympics. Who knows, maybe we'll send Cuomo to Beijing.

If China was still in a zero-Covid strategy mode, it might be their opportunity to do a very visible and public pivot to working out a way to make it possible to start to reopen borders. But it seems they are very far from this at the moment.

They are currently firing local officials for allowing 1 or 2 Covid cases into their cities. Good luck getting them to open up 5 months from now.

Absolutely agree, it will need a massive pivot from the central government, who have pursued a strategy of generally rubbishing the response to the virus in most other jurisdictions. None of us know if there will be an exit plan from zero COVID, but I just figured if there was going to be a massive U-turn, something very public and global like the winter Olympics might be the scapegoat to pin that change on. Complete speculation.

Don't the people being fired in these cases generally show up 6-12 months later in other roles? Like back with the multiple children's vaccine scandal. The public announcement of firings is just useful PR.

But it will be interesting to see what policy they come up with for the athletes and other attendees. I have a feeling whatever it is a lot of athletes are not going to be happy.

Likely every athlete will have to undergo a period of quarantine, except of course for those who have been here all along. Should benefit one of the two top medal winners at this year's summer games

YariGuy Let's make it happen! We need new t-shirts and tix to events that will take place in Beijing. I will float our fund money, if needed.
