Admittedly, I've never heard of anyone actually getting killed by an eBike crashing into them, but collisions themselves are certainly on my "attempt to avoid" list. My experiences echo those of 889 . If you find yourself walking on a sidewalk after dark in a city where eBikes are popular (i.e. not Shanghai), simply pausing to tie your shoe could set off a chain of events that results in an ambulance ride or two (i.e. the rider typically gets banged up pretty well himself). I mentioned "in the dark" because a lot of these guys appear to dislike using their headlights, so they really do come up on you without warning.

It's "insignificant" only if it's not you or a loved one killed or injured.

By the way, can you point to some statistics on that, or are you just guessing.

I know of a young woman in the USA who was badly injured in an ordinary (nonmotorized, but ridden very fast and carelessly) bike versus pedestrian accident in a "walk your bike" zone. It messed up her knee permanently, required several surgeries by top specialists, and required in her being close to bedridden for several months. Of course there were high medical bills for her part of the cost, although fortunately she had good insurance. If only it had just resulted in an ambulance ride.....

The most famous case I can remember is the doctor who founded the Huashan Hospital Emergency Department getting killed by an ele.me driver.

Here's something I found in English:

Doctor Li Mouqiu, who co-founded the emergency departments at Shanghai's two major hospitals, Ruijin and Huashan, was knocked off his electric scooter by a courier carrying takeout orders for Ele.me on Feb 24 near the crossroads of Zhongshan South Second Road and Caoxi Road.


Something else that hasn't been mentioned is that legally, e-bikes have a speed limit (enforced by electronic means from the manufacturer) of 25 km/h. However, most delivery drivers hack that and get bikes that go at least 40 km/h, some even higher.

That was a crash in the bike lane between two bikes. The doctor was riding a bike and didn't wear a helmet.

Traffic cops in Shanghai are not equipped with firearms. In fact police officers patrolling the streets in Shanghai are not armed in general. When a number of them became armed in 2014 it hit the big news:

Haha - all the cycles, bikes, cars, buses, coaches and trucks must have taken a detour to avoid him!!!!

In Shenzhen / Huizhou, you see motorbike police stationed on many pedestrian islands, and the most they do is blow a whistle at a passing motor / e bike if lacking a helmet. Sometimes they confiscate the bike, but this is more often at set road blocks.

I have driven thousands of km in China dealing with the most obnoxious of drivers and all sorts of bad behaviour. Never, ever, seen a traffic police bike or car pull over a motorist who is driving abysmal. Sure a few will get caught on camera, but 95% plus would get away with it and repeat daily............

ebike can be dangerous given the "e". But traditional bike kills as well:

I merely raise the possibility that traditional bike can kill, not to compare the quality of Chinese and American cyclists.

But if you really ask me that, both of them are really bad...it is just a matter of who gets killed first - the cyclist or others.
