I can't think of any occasion that I haven't had a pat down at a Chinese airport. It seems to be standard procedure, everyone sets off the detector and everyone gets checked.

One can avoid the detector by being scrupulous, but even then, I've had the alarm go off: for me, the pat-down doesn't bother me, it's just a small challenge to see if I can avoid the beep!

To the OP: you may have perfectly good reasons for avoiding, but as stated by others, 90%+ of pax get patted down. Unless you speak fluent Chinese, and can explain cogently why you want a room, I think the whole thing can blow up and be lost in translation. If this is a big issue, best to avoid China.

The video shows a brief glimpse of "pat down" procedure. Also consequence if you
"misbehave".

Pat down gone bad

More detailed Chinese version

Definitely TSA are more "hands on" than their Chinese counterparts.

Looks like they have perfected the art of getting a confession.
Never seen an "interrogation chair" like that. Complete with
paper and pen.

Thank you — that’s helpful to see.

They sometimes pat people down even if they the alarm doesn't go off. Don't be offended by it. They are patting you down for show. They don't want to touch your private parts nor will they.

I've managed on several occassions NOT to set the detector off.

But mostly, yes, you'll be getting a free light massage. Which doesn't feel intrusive at all.
