Will we run into visa trouble?

hello. Been trying to figure this out for a while.

Flying Koh-BKK-PVG as Americans with no visa. We have a separate return ticket from PVG to LAX. Schedule is:

land in PVG Tuesday at 1400
depart PVG for lax the following day (Wednesday) at 1800

slightly over 24 hours. From what I read we donít need a visa? Please help confirm?

thanks!

As long as Shanghai is the only landing in China then this qualifies for the 144 hour TWOV

Just make sure that you have printed out copies of your e-ticket receipts handy in case you are asked.

Thanks!

appreciate it. Thanks for peace of mind. Do I have to get that visa or they just give it upon entry.

It's not a visa, it's a visa free transit.
They'll give you a temporary permit for 144h at the airport.

Don't say visa as this just causes confusion. You're doing TWOV = transit WITHOUT visa. Be prepared to have this discussion with your airline at check in or at the gate.

BTW, can we assume that your PVG to LAX flight is nonstop? If you have a connection through BKK on the return, you cannot use TWOV.

Yup. AA non stop.

On arriving flight is USM to BKK to PVG.

This is a separate ticket, so will I need to show a print out of our American airlines ticket leaving Shanghai? I assume when we board this flight, will need to see some proof that we are leaving the country?

I assume you meant when arriving Shanghai or leaving Bangkok. In both cases, you should be prepared to provide proof of the PVG-LAX flight. A printout of your hotel reservation in Shanghai is not an absolute requirement, but could speed things up for you.

ETA: I just reread your post, and it appears that we are, indeed, talking about the same thing.
