Weekend getaway ideas ex-Kunming (KMG)

Until mid-December, I am based in KMG for an intensive Mandarin program. Some breaks to explore, get out of my cell apartment, and practice in the field are welcome. I can fly from 2pm onwards and catch a train from 1pm. My only constraints are: CNY 700-1,000 limit per night depending on property quality; reasonable travel time involved. I currently have Hilton Diamond status until the end of the year, so I might as well get some last hurrahs out of it. I am quite open to food and nature/environment attractions. Imperial history/pre-1911 architecture is a huge plus.

Currently on this list:

Dali
Shangri-la (anyone been here?)

Beijing (even just 1 day and a half will be worth it)
Shanghai (friend here)
Shenzhen (meet some HK friends)

Any others? Chengdu looks quite interesting. I might put Hainan on the list.

For a long weekend, Tengchong and the Nujiang Valley make a good excursion to a beautiful part of Yunnan that's still relatively untouristed, particularly by foreigners.

The border town of Ruili is also somewhat intriguing.

Should be noted: my visa is single entry, so there's no coming back in.

Were things different, I'd happily hit up BKK (again) and SGN (never been). I'd pass on another visit to SIN.
