New 30-Day Visa-Free Visit to Hainan: Caution!
News reports seem to indicate that starting May 1, citizens of those magic 59 countries can just show up and visit Hainan for 30 days without a visa.

But the official announcement says that these travelers must "由在海南设立的旅行社接待," that is they must be received by a travel agency setup in Hainan. One news report does mention this, noting that, "Under the new policy, individuals from 59 countries can visit the province for 30 days visa-free as long as they book their tour through [Hainan] travel agencies."

Hainan is a good place for foreigners living in China to visit to get some tropical weather but I would not recommend it for anyone traveling from far abroad with access to all the other beautiful beach areas in Asia. They have made great strides in catering to tourists since I first visited in 1999 but based on my most recent visit last month, there is still a ways to go.
