How much $ for 16 hour layover in Shanghai?

We will be spending the night in Shanghai in a few weeks on our way to ICN. How much currency would be good to have for maglev / taxi to / from airport, dinner, breakfast, etc? There will be four of us, two adults, an eight year old and a four year old.

Taxi: PVG to downtown area one way 200CNY
Dinner: 100CNY/person should be more than enough, 400CNY
Breakfast: 50CNY/person should be more than enough, 200CNY
Miscellaneous: 200CNY
Total: 1200CNY

OP also needs to return to the airport. A bit tight for food depending where one eats.

ATMs are plentiful and while you might lose a few % if your card has foreign transaction fees, they are an easy way to tailor your money needs. You probably don't want to be stuck with excess RMB, so don't worry if you don't take out enough to start.

As for maglev prices... I wouldn't take the maglev from the airport... the taxi at Longyang Road (maglev terminus) can be intimidating and demand outrageous prices.. If you want the maglev take it in reverse, back out to the airport.

You'll need about RMB60 per taxi to get to the terminus, then RMB40 per passenger for the maglev itself. You may need two taxis depending on how much luggage you have. Hotel staff will get you in the taxi and on your way to the maglev.

Excellent to know! We will plan to travel as you mentioned. We are planning to leave the bigger luggage in a locker overnight so we can travel lighter to the hotel for the night. Thanks!

Have a printout (or phone picture) of your departure flights from PVG for the fare of RMB40 per passenger. Non passengers are charged RMB50 per ticket. There's also a VIP cabin, double the price, but it's not really worth it. If you make sure you board the train at the front of the queue you'll have your choice of seats, no need to pay the extra for VIP.
