Shanghai goes all out nonsmoking - hotel mitigations

Things change, particular in China.

Shanghai goes all out for nonsmoking in "any public place with a roof"...my trip this March found myself couldn't smoke in my fav. Hilton smoking room...

Any insights for getting hotels in Shanghai that still allow to smoke?

Yes, I know it's a "bad habit", but duty free Marlboro is too atractive....

You aren't smoking because of the price of duty free cigarettes.

Are they actually serious about enforcement now? I've seen an awful lot of smoking in non-smoking areas in China.

If the room has a balcony, should work.

The balcony rooms tend to be in the suites...have to search around..not too common.

I wonder if they banned smoking in hospitals...they say something in rules
about children's hospitals.

I have given Chinese doctors cartons of ChungWha cigarettes and bottles of
expensive cognac as tips. They seem to like that.

Staff made foreigners butt out in a club last week and there were new signs up in English. They let the Chinese smoke...or they just didn't spot the ones that I saw smoking...which is entirely possible.

So yes, things seem to be changing. The week before, there were no signs and it was a smoking free-for-all...

I'll be there in a few months.

I'm bothered by smoke, the policy sounds good to me but I doubt it's actually going to be enforced very well.

Beijing has been non-smoking in hotels for a couple of years, but it doesn't seem to be enforced.
I preferred when they had separate smoking rooms so non-smoking guests could get a room that didn't have a strong odor. Now, since all rooms are in theory non-smoking, it seems like every room reeks of stale cigarettes since many guests still smoke in the rooms.
Hotels are unwilling to enforce non-smoking since so many Chinese guests smoke.

I've found non-smoking signs to basically be interpreted as "please smoke as much as you can" by many Chinese. It would be great if finally the police does what they should, and make sure that laws are upheld.
