do i need a visa for this trip??
 
hey,

i going to HKG on 12/26 and leaving HKG on 12/28 to Shanghai. MY next flight is going to Japan on 12/30. I do have the german passport, so do i need to apply for a visa or can i use the 72h free visa on arrival. If yes do i need to contact the airline to inform that i will leave the country on 12/30

Ihre Reise gilt für 72-Stunden Visumfreiheit.

Upon arrival in Shanghai, you must present your onward ticket to Japan to Chinese immigration in order to receive your visa.

You will not get a visa on arrival. There is no visa involved. There is a Transit Without Visa (English) which in the original Chinese is a 过境免签政策. The distinction is important in both a legal sense and also in what the reaction of your originating airline airline at check-in might be.

(my bolds) Not really conversant in German, but aren't you contradicting yourself here? Visa waiver is correct, what you get in your passport is a special stamp which is not a visa.
