You should really consider staying in ja, xuhui, or luwan.

Ningbo isn't that cool but putuoshan is nice.

I have considered the Mandarin Oriental and the Park Hyatt in Pudong and the Andaz in Xintiandi. There are a few other options on the bund. What would be the best area for a young couple to stay in? We're looking at doing some touristy things while enjoying nightlife and restaurants and some shopping.

Also, in our travels we rarely take public transportation and mostly rely on cabs and now uber.

Which general area should I look for hotels in?

Honestly for a taste of Shanghai I would suggest staying somewhere like the Astor House Hotel. Hard to find somewhere with more history.

I used to stay there during my school days in 1995 because it was only y50 per night. I gather that it is much nicer now but the area is still sub optimal.

i think it's just under 600 a night now :) it's a very short walk to the bund... i actually thought the area was ok.... (as you know, but for the benefit of others reading... in terms of crime, china is very safe so that's not an issue)

The newish Nanjingnan - Hangzhou HSR line makes quite interesting triangle excursions possible from Shanghai.

Say, Yangcheng Lake (if it's crab season), Suzhou proper, Nanjing, Hangzhou and back to Shanghai. Or any other combination along the three HSR main lines.

Given that this is true, we are thinking of going out to Hungzhou, and Ningbo to round out the other days. Is this is sound plan and better yet, are there other places near by which we should consider? Our family of 4 includes 2 teens. And our current plan is to stay at the Hyatt on the Bund for 1st 2 days and P Hyatt on the last day before departure. Any help will be appreciated!

What times? Especially as a Diamond, it would be a waste to arrive at the PH late at night and leave early the next morning. You at least want to arrive by late afternoon to enjoy the view and then the lights starting at dusk. Also, don't miss a PH breakfast.

With the opening of the Shangri-La West Shanghai and the always awesome PULI across the street, there is no excuse to stay anywhere in Shanghai except Jing'an. For nightlife, history, access to the French Concession and general city appeal nothing beats this area. For a more boutique experience the URBN hotel is also highly recommended, also in the same area.

If you want to stay in Hyatt or Starwood branded hotels or insist on the bund or Pudong, go ahead and do it, but just know you won't be staying in the best area of Shanghai.

I haven't stayed in any other areas than Lujiazui and Zhabei (Daning) for years if the hotel was of my own choosing...;)

But as with other cities, each of us better find "their" Shanghai and the small details that make possibly the largest urban sprawl on this planet liveable and even likeable.

I think it's an 'each to their own' :) I lived in jing'an for 5 years (until Nov 2013) and would not say it is the place to live for nightlife or access to the French Concession... the french concession can be a very painful 30 minute taxi ride away in peak time. And the nightlife? French concession yes, bund yes, but not jing'an

1) I can (and do) walk from JA Temple to Yongfu Road in under 20 minutes
2) The only hotel in the French Concession itself that FTers care about is 12 Hengshan
3) The #2 bus goes straight to JA Temple
4) Dining options are among the best in the city (yes, you can pay a lot more near the Bund, but the food isn't any better)
5) The Portman itself has everything one needs to enjoy a weekend in Shanghai (I don't recommend this strategy, but it is a fallback)

Agreed... maybe... but if you were a tourist coming to Shanghai for a few days I don't know whether i would be recommending Jing'An as the place to stay. Again.. all personal preference.

(my closest metro was a 10 minute walk away, and JA temple was 15 mins.. so walking after #2 bus was not an option... taxi was pretty much the only option to get around - especially last summer with consecutive days over 40-45 degrees)

Where not to stay in SH

1) Pudong
2) Bund
3) Gubei
4) People's Square
5) Train station area

If they do have a loyalty program of any substance, the word has yet to get out. :D

The "French Concession" is something that people like to talk about but very few have any real clue of its boundaries. This is due, in large part, to the fact that it expanded and shrank during its 100 year existence.

The following map is one of the broadest depictions I've seen:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Fo...cessionMap.jpg

But, practically speaking, I don't think of Xintiandi, let alone any part of the Bund, as being part of the (former) French Concession.
