Tianluo TuLou

Does anybody here know of a good driver in Xiamen that can take us to Tianluo TuLou as a day trip?

If there is a tour group, that would be OK as well.

Has anybody been to this Unesco Heritage Site? Is it worth the effort?

Yes I've been there and yes, it is worth the effort. Just look beyond the obvious trappings of tourism that have hit the area in recent years. The ticket to Tianluokeng Cluster is sold in combination with two other nearby sites: Yuchanglou tulou and Taxia Village, which are also well worth seeing. Ticket was RMB 100 or thereabouts. I'd be careful about one of those Chinese tour groups. I did a trip report on this (Dec 2011, most of which should still be valid) that describes transport options. Search forum for "jiejies fujian adventure." Additionally, Apple Travel in Xiamen (googlable) can provide car/driver and/or guide depending on your preference but it won't be cheap.

If you have the time, an overnight at a Taxia guesthouse or in Hukeng village or Yongding town is recommended vs a daytrip from Xiamen. It's 3+ hours each way by road. Some people like the experience of staying overnight in a tulou but that's not my cup of tea so read up before you commit.

Just to update.

Due to time restrictions and a bad case of the runs, we opted for a one day tour instead of an over night.

It was 368 RMB for two people, pickup from the hotel at 8 AM and home by 6PM.
Included lunch and a tour of HeGui Luo cluster. This was in Chinese only but pretty much was self guided.

It got a good taste of what Hakka culture was.

Our tour operator had 5 different tours available but she specifically recommended that for Westerners who want a taste of TuLuo should go to HeGui Luo cluster. The others tours are must longer days and or take a couple of days.

The private tour was an option but at 1000 RMB per person we felt that our Chinese was good enough.

It was worth the effort.
