Beijing - custom suits? (Silk Market?)

My friend told me that it is inexpensive to get a custom suit made in Beijing.

He said I can get a custom suit done (a nice one) for about $100 USD.

Is he crazy?

I noticed in the Silk Market there are some clothing shops, but I have yet to approach them because I dont know the costs yet.

How much should a custom suit cost in the silk market?
custom shirt?

is there a better shop to try?

Thanks

The silk market is overpriced compared to yaxiu and 3.3. A friend of mine recently got some really nice suits made at 3.3, though I can't remember the name of the tailor (not Lisa, for sure). Cost is around y1000 for a 3-piece with nice fabric. For shirts, I dare say that Shanghai (fabric market) is where it's at these days. Cost = y100-y150 for much cooler designs/fabric than I'm accustomed to in HK.

So that is about $150 USD.
Can you give me information on 3.3, I am not familiar with it.
If you give the location, I can ask the hotel what train to take there.

wow. so at the Fabric Market in Shanghai, I can get a custom shirt made for 150 RMB?
That is cheap. (now I know what amount to try and bargain for)

I have to say, although I love the idea of custom shirts and suits (and my wedding suit was true bespoke -- i.e. hand-cut and stitched), I'm a bit wary about the Chinese offerings, and have not yet waded in yet.

I really can't believe that one can get horn buttons, true surgeon's cuffs etc, in a suit of 100% wool for 1000RMB. The fabric should cost more than that.

Having said that, I've never had custom shirts made, and keep meaning to go somewhere to get measured, but yaxiu etc always look crowded. I'd be willing to give it a go. I'd be interested in some recommendations.

Fyi, 3.3 and yaxiu are both in/ next to sanlitun village.

tb

PS this should get merged into the general beijing tailor thread

In my experience, you get what you pay for. I spent about 1K on a suit at Yaxiu last year - the fabric is nice, they measured me carefully, took it back to rework when I wasn't happy with the first job - it still looks like a cheap suit

Ya Shi in BJ

As TB said, this thread could be merged.

AND, you will get what you pay for in Ya Shi. The tailor prices on 3rd floor are about the same, but the material prices can "really" vary...
Expect the 150 rmb shirts to last about 5 wear days as the material will be really thin.

Oh, BTW- ties are about 10-20 rmb in Ya Shi.

Not the new ones we get in Shanghai... better than the guy in HK we've been using for years.
