I'll be spending a few days in Shanghai with my wife on vacation. Our first time in Shanghai (and the end of a two week trip). Friends have recommended the Peninsula. I'm ok with that, but I've got plenty of Starwood points. Looking for Peninsula vs Westin vs St. Regis recs. And yes I've searched the forum.

Peninsula >>> st. Regis > Westin. Not close. Have you considered the Fairmont Peace? Near Pen quality at 50% price. Or, try the Puli to get a more fashionable, less western crowd.

Le Meridien is a good, centrally-located hotel for a tourist.

Peace Hotel is good, except you'll need to pay a premium for a room with a good view of the Pudong Skyline. I wouldn't waste my time with a non-view room at this property.

I'm pretty sure there is a massive Shanghai Hotels thread somewhere........

The Peninsula is stunning and although I have only stayed once, I am a big big fan. The Westin is ok, but dated and a bit blah, IMO.

Four Points by Sheraton at Daning shopping mall/Gonghexin Rd.

My favourite hotel in Shanghai by far considering location (two stops from Shanghai main railway station on line 1 in a local residential neighbourhood), services (plenty of Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Western dining choices at the shopping mall plus a fully stocked grocery store) and accessibility by taxi.

Was just at that mall for a meeting the other day. If op is asking about the Pen, Westin or St. Regis I don't think he's going to be happy at a Four Points out in Zhabei despite the proximity to Blue Frog.

All of my friends in this neighbourhood are well-to-do born Shanghainese and it's supposedly one of the few areas that's stayed mostly local.

Daning is also one of the few places in town where you have broad dining options even without venturing outside (the interconnected shopping mall restaurant floor) Especially the Xinjiang style eatery there is rather good.

The novelty of the Bund wears down quickly in the punishing heat and humidity outside. The only occasion I really had a good time there was at a Christmas party of a European bank sometime back in 2008 with terrace views of the river. ;)

Blue Frog is not that bad either at the end of the day...As all who are more familiar with Shanghai realities, like you, do realize. :)

There is no St. Regis in SH anymore, since this will be your 1st time in SH & want to burn SPG pts, Le Royal Meridien is your best bet: great location, great lounge, only downside is the taxi situation during rush hour.
