This quite an interesting conundrum. I'm hard pressed to think of any restaurants that don't use eggs apart from some vegan places. But, ironically, most street food falls into this category... just maybe steer clear of malatang; a friend told me last night that a lot of those places use recycled oil. which contains far worse contaminants than eggs.

Alternatively, if you focus on the higher end of the spectrum (restaurants with foreign owners/chefs), you should be okay.

Nut allergy

Not wanting to start a new thread when the topic is so similar, would you be able to offer the same chinese phrases and advice for tree nut allergies? We are going to China in October and my wife has an anaphylactic allergy to tree nuts, not peanuts which are legumes, but almonds, cashews, walnuts, etc. - the consequences of eating them are life threatening.

Thank you.

Apologies for not getting back to you on this sooner—luckily, since your trip won't begin until October, this should still be in plenty of time! :)

我不能吃坚果,我对坚果过敏,有致命危险 // wo3 bu4 neng2 chi1 jian1guo3, wo3 dui4 jian1guo3 guo4min3, you3 zhi4ming4 wei2xian3 // I cannot eat (tree) nuts; I have a life-threatening allergy to them.
有什么菜不含有坚果? // you3 shen2me cai4 bu4 han2you3 jian1guo3 // What food do you have that does not contain (tree) nuts?

While these should help, particularly in your wife's case of a life-threatening allergy, please be especially cautious and don't count on a random Chinese waitress or chef actually understanding the implications of the allergy.

Safe travels! :)

Thank you very much, Scifience. We, of course, will be travelling with a couple of epi-pens to use in case of emergency. I just want to keep the emergencies down to a dull roar.
