Filter mask for Child - Beijing?
Any suggestions for a child age 10-12?
I've seen charcoal filter masks but not specifically for a child. Indoors HEPA filters are in use but you can't stay indoors forever. She is coughing a lot nowadays. Thanks, Jim |

Black fungus is good for circulation and respitory system. For mask to filter the superfine particulates would require a gas mask...which they make child size, but would be awkward.

As anacapamalibu rightly points out, you need more of a respirator/gas mask-type contraption if you want to filter out small particulate pollution (which is generally the most dangerous).
Assuming you're within China, there are a few small/child-sized options on Taobao that might fit your needs: http://search8.taobao.com/search?q=%...297358_8935934 Honestly, though, I'd probably look into other reasons for the cough rather than burdening your kid with a hideous-looking filter mask. Despite the miserable air quality, I've never developed a chronic cough from spending extended periods of time in China. |

Agreed that the cough might mean asthma and the difficulty of removing fine particulates and their health implications.
She doesn't cough like that in the US and it's not possible to remove her from the polluted air. Jim |
Totobobo masks. They come in children's sizes also. There is now a distributor or two in Beijing but I don't have the info handy. Try internet search and also on www.thebeijinger.com

http://totobobo.taobao.com/ Although the child-size ones aren't listed, I messaged the seller who indicated that she could get them for around RMB 150. Might be worth looking into. ^ |
Before buying off taobao (or anybody in China), I suggest you check with Totobobo (Singapore is HQ) directly to see who their authorized reseller is in China/Beijing. You don't want to end up getting substandard fakes. I don't know if anybody is actually faking these masks, but since everything else in China is being copied, it's best to assume the possibility exists with these as well. Even if a little more expensive to ensure the real thing, it's a lot cheaper in the long run than doctor's visits and medications.

as someone whom hasn't been to china before, are these masks a piss take?
the reason i ask is my fiance suffers from mild asthma and has previously had bronchitis - we recent visited Hanoi and she had breathing issues due to the smog. We're taking our first trip to beijing/shanghai/chengdu in May and I'm keen to get her something to assisting her breathing. so i guess the question is... if we buy these, will we be cruising the streets looking like idiot tourists or does everyone have masks ? |
