Thanks once again for your advice, I now feel sufficiently reassured to give it a try !!

Thanks to all the helpful advice (and referrals) I received from moondog and trublu, I went ahead and installed ExpressVPN a couple of days ago and I thought it could be worth giving a summary of the experience to date.
The purchase and installation procedures are quick and easy, helped by a very well laid out website, which includes an excellent troubleshooting section. I installed EVPN on my PC (Windows 7) and on my smartphone (Android 4.2.2); Utilisation is very easy and use friendly, you can switch on and off at will and there is no effect on your existing connections or settings. Very reassuring ! I can obviously now use Google Chrome and also access stuff like Youtube, which is great. As regards connection speed, it is interesting to compare the performance on my two devices - I set it to Hong Kong 3 on my smartphone and it works like a dream, uninterrupted connections, fast access, no problems getting onto any sites...perfect. On my pc, it is a bit more temperamental - I have tried the three Hong Kong servers and also Los Angeles, Hong Kong 2 seems the best, but there are still times when the connection slows down. Also, there are a couple of sites, including Flyertalk, where the connection is much better without the VPN (the problems does not occur if I use my smartphone). That said, I know that selection of the optimal server takes a bit of getting used to, so I'm not complaining ! To sum up, I am very happy with the product, especially on my smartphone, and as a non computer literate user I have no problems with utilisation. Thanks again to moondog and trubu! |
Express VPN still works for myself and my colleagues, but performance has been sub optimal for us for the past several days. As usual, phones work better than computers, but both are slow. My boss has been having the best luck with the Singapore servers; for me, HK3 is still the best.

Let's just hope all the rumours surrounding our dearest Net Nanny in Chief mean we're in for positive, not negative, change in the near future. |

I am not having any trouble from my phone (HK 3 is working well and speeds are pretty much as normal), but my computer cannot connect at all today - I have tried HK, Singapore and Los Angeles using various protocols without any success, impossible to establish a connection. There is a message box to contact support, so I replied, let's see what happens.
BUT.....using ExpressVPN on my computer is really slowing everything down today, each day it seems to be getting a bit worse. For example, Skype calls to fixed lines are impossible today unless I switch the VPN off (in which case the call goes through with no problems) and the same applies more or less to all the sites where I can access without VPN, where the best thing is to switch ExpressVPN off before connecting. It's a bit of a hassle, but I am now only using the VPN if I am using Google Chrome or goping onto YouTube, the rest of the time I am leaving it disconnected. No such trouble with the connection from my phone though, everything is more or less normal. |
I'm still in Beijing; switched to Singapore-CBD on my computer yesterday...was slow but more reliable than faster HK-3. Still using Singapore-CBD today, and it's much better than yesterday. My phone has been solid on HK-3 throughout.

Current Beijing tips are requested (from me). I'm on south Korea now (because HK is unstable)....so slow!!! (But, at least it works.)

Just keeping this thread alive.....
My connection in Beijing has been horrible since I got back last Saturday (I had been away for two months, so I don't know to what extent the problem pre-dates my return) - speed is bad, connection keeps hanging etc. HK 3 is the best bet, but it is still awful. But as always, the problems only occur on my pc, my smartphone VPN connection is very stable and quick. |
Well, the local ones I'd been using have all crapped out over the last ten days or so. Any updates on how expressvpn has been recently and whether I can signup without leaving the country?

Sure, no problem to sign up from within China. |

ExpressVPN is working OK, it was a bit less stable over the Christmas period than previously and speeds were a bit lower also, mainly on my pc rather than my smartphone, but it was more than adequate for my needs.
