Guangzhou (CAN) over-midnight transfer - visa needed?
Does anybody have any recent experience with the intl(?)-intl transfer at CAN with the connecting flight after midnight?
Booked the flight with CZ: AMS - PEK (tech.stop) - CAN - AKL. Time period between arriving at PEK and leaving CAN should be around 8 hours. Layover at CAN is from 19:30 to 00:30 after midnight. TIMATIC says (for my nationality, Czech Rep.) : TWOV (Transit Without Visa): Visa required, except for Holders of confirmed onward tickets transiting TIRULES/R32 through Guangzhou Airport (CAN) on the same calendar day. At all other airports: Visa required, except for Holders of confirmed onward tickets for a max. transit TIRULES/R32 time of 24 hours Do I really need visa? Thank you in advance for any help. |
No, you don't need a visa for this double-stop transit. CZ should well know how to handle this maneuver including how to get you through the technical stop at PEK. Don't worry about the connecting flight being after midnight. However, when you arrive at CAN, your processing will probably require you to stay at the airport, and will likely deliver you to the outbound international gate area. With this sort of layover duration and schedule, you wouldn't have time to leave airport and do anything useful anyway. However, the terminal is relatively sparse with places to eat and things to do, so try to get something fairly soon after you arrive, before things start shutting down for the evening. If you have lounge access, or if purchasing a daypass is an option, that might be worth looking into.

Jiejie, thank you so much for the reply!
However, I'm still quite afraid if the AMS personnel will be ok with the TIMATIC entry and let me through to the plane, especially after reading this and this (the last one on the page) comments. Can I be sure that the AMS check-in will go well? Thanks again. |
TIMATIC update
There is a fresh update of TIMATIC that no longer contains the same-day requirement for a TWOV at Guangzhou. It seems everything is o.k. now and consistent with Jiejie's post.
TWOV (Transit Without Visa): Visa required, except for Holders of confirmed onward tickets for a max. transit TIRULES/R32 time of 24 hours. - All transiting passengers are subject to passport control. Passengers in transit are required to hold passports or passport replacing documents that are accepted for entry into China (People's Rep.). For more details on document requirements, please enter China (People's Rep.) as a destination. - Leaving the airport transit area is allowed. Visa Issuance: - A transit visa can be obtained at Dalian (DLC) Airport only for a max. stay of 7 days provided passenger: - holds confirmed onward tickets; - is a national of a country having diplomatic relations with China (People's Rep.). Fee: USD 14.-. |
