Question Shanghai - Nanjing High-Speed Trains Timetable

Hi everyone,

I just found out that the Shanghai - Najing high speed railway is open for service now. ^

However, I could not find a timetable for the non-stop trains. The site I usually use for chinese train travel, only shows connections of 2 hours+
http://www.chinatravelguide.com/ctgw...Submit1=submit

Does anyne have any additional insights? Would be highly appreciated

In general nothing on the web is reliable in China, but this by far has been the best and most accurate website:

great! Thank you guys. That's very helpful
I was not aware that so many trains depart from Hongqiao station - Altough I'll most probably will use the main station service this time

Trains from Shanghai Main Station use conventional tracks and lower speeds so travel time will be longer. It really depends both on where you are starting your journey and what the final destination is.

I'm willing to bet that Hongqiao Stn is much nicer, probably similar to BJ South Stn.

Well, all the (bi-) hourly express trains (without any stops between SH and NJ) leave from SH main station. I assume trains are running on the same tracks from SH Hongqiao to Nanjing, and it's just the part from SH main to Hongqiao that makes the trip a little longer, no?

Wow, never knew about this. Awesome. While it still shows the Dongche trains (D trains) between the cities, most of the ticket machines will not let you buy tickets on the Dongche between Nanjing and Shanghai. Not sure how to do this anymore (hence lots of complaints from people about the ticket prices).

Well, check the schedule. The hype over the new highspeed train (called Gaotie in Chinese: short for gaosutielu = high speed railway) is that it only takes 1:15 from Shanghai to Nanjing. But most of the G trains make stops along the way so most of them range from 1:40-2:20, which really isn't that much faster than the highspeed trains (called Dongche - which are pretty new themselves) around 2:30.

Hongqiao station is really nice, when I rode the train two weeks ago they were still doing construction like mad to finish the rest of the tracks. It just opened when the new line opened. Keep in mind it is by the Hongqiao airport, so distance is further. Also, cabs are quite used to going to the Hongqiao station yet so I had to wait awhile to catch a cab when my train got back.

As I previously said, it's the stops that make the trains go slower or longer. If you look carefully, the non-stop trains only take 1:15 to Shanghai, and 1:13 to Shanghai Hongqiao, so really not that different. Business class tickets on these trains sell out pretty fast.

When I remember correctly, at the time the project was made public (2005-2006?), the goal was to provide a suburban style train system on the corridor (Hefei)-Nanjing-Shanghai, with G and D trains. G trains are supposed to connect all major cities every 10 or 20 minutes ("metro") style, whilst D trains are (or eventually will) stop in smaller cities as well, and continue to destinations outside the SH-NJ main corridor.

Therefore, it could be (chinese) logic not to sell through tickets from SH to NJ on D trains, as they're meant to connect smaller cities.

I believe to recall the goal was that there's a G train from e.g. Suzhou to Shanghai every 10 minutes, and a D train every 5 (I do recall I was stunned by the short intervals...). But, I last read about this in Suzhou in 2006, and a quick google or baidu didn't give any detailed results either.

Does anyone know more?

While I haven't had the chance to take the new connection, a friend used it for the short Suzhou - Kunshan hop and remarked that ticket prices in 1st class were double the D train fare.

Not sure if that is accurate but this China Daily article also mentions substantially higher fares than for other highspeed services:

http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/china/2...t_11038626.htm

"A ticket for the express train is twice as expensive as that of a high-speed train (CHR), without saving any time," said Fu Tingting, a 37-year-old passenger who frequently travels between Shanghai and Nanjing.

These are the prices I found for Shanghai - Nanjing:

G-Trains: 146 RMB / 233 RMB

D-Trains: 94 RMB / 113 RMB

So quite a price premium, but compared to Europe/Japan still very cheap

Took a G train to Zhenjiang yesterday. Travel time was 10 minutes shorter than D trains i normally take. All stations along the SH-NJ route have new "Inter-city" stations to accommodate the G trains, all well designed, as is the Hongqiao station. Note though that there were no F&B outlets in the waiting hall. I walked to the HQ airport terminal 2 (5 minutes walk), but all coffee shops were still closed at 8am. The design of the station is much more pleasant than Shanghai Train Station (logistics, cleanliness, layout). The G trains (3rd generation CRH) are not much different than their predecessors, similar layout and comfort in both classes. Prices are substantially higher and trains are just as busy (meaning no same day purchases, unless you get lucky).

This sounds very promising actually, if coming from, say, Seoul-Gimpo or Tokyo-Haneda. Would you say the walk is easily doable with luggage?

Ah, finally a convenient way from a Shanghai airport to the Yangtze delta?
