It depends on when you will visit Beijing. If it is summer time, Chengde is the place you need to go. People escape Beijing in Summer time only to find a place with relatively low temp. Besides, Chengde is the place to keep the empiror from the heat in old times. So you can go and see the old-style building there.

In April the Summer pallace on the west side will be graet. Plan as many outside activities on sat/sun when the pollution is low !. If on the west side in Haidan, there are some great new shopping malls there.
Also a great wine tour on the west side at 'Dragon Seal', & on 4th ring road , & on the west side, is a good golf course, Beijing Willow golf club; www.willowgolf.net
