DHS asks for repeal of RealID
I'm surprised this didn't get reported here yet.
See http://us.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/04/2...ate/index.html Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano this week said she is working with governors to repeal the Real ID Act, which was passed in 2005 and went into effect last year. |

It's funny to me...RealID made it so that your license would have to have your full legal name instead of any nick names.
SecureFlight is coming soon and requires full name on boarding passes. Why can't we stop the implementation of SecureFlight also because as stated in that thread there are many people out there with Frank instead of Francis on their DLs. This would not be allowed to happen under RealID b/c the license would have to say Francis. You would think that they should go hand in hand so hopefully now that RealID could go that SecureFlight will just never manifest. |
Although I think Janet was a poor choice (Sheriff Arpaio would have been it), the real fault lies that shortly after 9/11 with the creation of TSA the feds should have offered to pay the states for the modifications needed for REAL ID.
That would have defeated the main stumbling block. Feds also didn't go far enough in that they should have standardized all boarding passes. Even if Janet fails in cancelling it, she can always just keep putting roadblocks in; unless Obama complains. |

If they ever make "1st class buffoon" a cabinet level position? |

Good for her. Now if we could just convince her the 9/11 gang did not enter via Canada or Mexico, perhaps we could then dispense with even more nonsense.
She said she wants to substitute the federal law with "something else that pivots off of the driver's license but accomplishes some of the same goals RealID is so totally bass ackward -- the problem is that states are using a driving licence -- which was only intended to demonstrate that the bearer was licensed to drive -- as an identity document. Instead of just doing what most places do and make it illegal to use a licence for identification purposes, they instead come up with RealID, which attempts to create a driving licence/identity document hybrid, ignoring the fact that many people who are perfectly qualified to drive may not be able to prove their identity. On top of that, of course, was the sneaky, underhanded way that the RealID legislation was slipped through without any debate -- debate which would have exposed the fundamental illogic of the RealID approach. |

That curmudgeon US Congressman Sensenbrenner of Wisconsin -- who was the driver of the REAL ID Act in Congress -- is getting a public slapdown from Napolitano. ^^ I just hope that the "repeal" legislation does not include or come associated with some other bad aspects of this supposed "ID is security" garbage.

I've seen that happen at a motor vehicle office...a man denied a renewal of his DL because he didn't have papers from the church in which he was confirmed in Italy and he could not get them.

I think the interior border checks and RealID is nonsense, though. But the Passport Card and WHTI thing are legit. (The name "WHTI" is a lie and a disgrace, it should be called something that doesn't imply that that half the world was for it-- like USWHTI.) |
