At BWI, at the time, they were doing both roles. Same guy tried to trip me up by asking specific questions about my city and neighborhood, feigning that he had relatives there. Did the same trick with the guy ahead of me (different city) and the woman behind me (yet another city). Yet when questioned back, he didn't know a durned thing about the city involved.

See Spot Run.

Second, a lot of people forget to renew their DL/ID. I doubt that you were being harassed, just given a reminder that it was almost time to renew.:)
It's not your place to remind me. Over. And Over. And Over.

Just use your passport for identification.

I may be wrong, but I think part of the "bad planning" the OP refers to is being caught on the road without a passport in addition to a soon-to-expire license??

As DL renewal is a matter between the OP and their DMV, little reminders by unaffiliated parties strikes me as meddlesome rather than "just trying to be helpful," which is the common retort. @:-)

OFTMFD. :)

'specially since there is no good reason for checking the ID in the first place....

First of all, thanks to everyone for the helpful replies! Indeed you are correct, I do not have access to my passport and am holding an about-to-be expired license. I went ahead and used the online renewal function, however, which I didn't know existed (my old state does not offer such a service). Just in time, too. Thanks again!

I'll take a smack in the face for that one... lol.

For my PR license, I just pay someone to wait in line for me with all of the appropriate paperwork in order.

"I don't think it's a question of having the time or not, it's a matter of having let the situation come to this in the first place. In other words, it is much like allowing one's passport expire when abroad. You just don't let it happen."

:D

Yes, and when I'm working the mag, looking at PAX as they come through, it's not really my place to tell you if your pants are unzipped (you would not believe how often we see this! what's up with you guys?) but as a kindness, I will discreetly do so.

Also, when I remind people to get their driver's licenses renewed, the vast majority seem to have no clue they're on the verge of expiring (I only do it if they're within 30 days). Most thank me for pointing this out. I have never had anyone appear to become offended at the reminder.

I will continue to try to help people out, not because it's required, but because it seems like the right thing to do. Remember the Golden Rule? :)

Don't the TSA SPOTS say "If You've Got Nothing to Hide, You've Got Nothing to Worry About"?

Been on a series of trips, and haven't been home in time to renew. How will TSA handle something like this? I may try and call the DMV to see if they can quickly send me some sort of extension (the expiration isn't for four or five more days). Hopefully, the answer is that I'll just have to put up with some secondary screening?

For the last year i have been flying with an absolutely disgusting driver's license. It had been washed 3-4x and almost all the front covering was worn off. My birthdate was completely illegible as well as some of my name. The picture was terrible. 4 liquor stores in town refused to sell me alcohol due to how terrible it was. Even after this, i had no problems at any airports. Makes you feel safe huh ?
