BERLIN - A man nearly died from alcohol poisoning after quaffing a liter (two pints) of vodka at an airport security check instead of handing it over to comply with new carry-on rules, police said Wednesday.

The incident occurred at the Nuremberg airport on Tuesday, where the 64-year-old man was switching planes on his way home to Dresden from a holiday in Egypt.

New airport rules prohibit passengers from carrying larger quantities of liquid onto planes, and he was told at a security check he would have to either throw out the bottle of vodka or pay a fee to have his carry-on bag checked as cargo.

Instead, he chugged the bottle down — and was quickly unable to stand or otherwise function, police said.

:D:D:D That's the way to stick it!^

Great. Now the TSA (and their European counterparts) can point to this as evidence that liquids really are dangerous; if he had been carrying 100mL or less of vodka he'd be fine. :)

or he could have just carried few of those 100ml and almost die on the plane

Sad. :(

Reminds me of the vodka drinking contest in some former Soviet state a couple of years ago (few years ago?) in which at least one participant died. Prize, IIRC, was a year's supply of vodka (which for the winner, must have meant multiple 55 gal drums). Thread about it in OMNI for the curious.

A couple of more:
1) Man dies in a Dominican Republic tequila drinking contest, prize $330.
2) Woman dies from water poisoning trying to win a Nintendo Wii.
Link.

If he had just learned to share with his fellow passengers, then this wouldn't have happened :)

No question but that this guy gets my vote for the 2007 Darwin Award.

Was this the captain?

Some guy once did this in front of me at German customs, but with a bag of apples. Luckily for him, binging on apples isn't quite as dangerous.

Until I read the post I thought it was going to be about a Southwest passenger.

According to non-English language news sources, he was heading to Dresden.

At first I thought he was Russian, because I thought only Russians don't throw away full bottles of Vodka, but apparently Germans are the same :D.

...and he definitely wasn't Russian.... to many, 1 L of Vodka is not that much.

Unless the vodka made him sterile, he's net eligible for that award.

In 'Comments' from the USAT version:

TSA wouldn't let me go through with my pies because they had a gel topping (cherries)..sure enough I didn't hand it over, I fed everyone in line...the screeners just wanted breakfast.....
