Try giving your sob story to farmers who have been devastated by the Mediterranean Fruit Fly or Citrus Canker.

shoulda flown through ORD, no scans of baggage or sniffing dogs. you could sneak a cow in through there.

Last three times I've gone through ORD int'l arrivals, a dog was around sniffing bags.

Too bad we can't have them sniffing around in the "security" lines.

What none of these posts nor the linked article address are the family's reactions & behavior when the contraband was discovered.

That might have a lot to do with the fine. :D

I assume "threatened with a night in jail" was a response to this guy being a jerk. There have been so many cases of agricultural contamination - especially from fruit - that this is no laughing matter. As a kid, I remember the orange groves burning due to citrus canker....

A $300 fine ($100 per fruit) actually seems pretty appropriate. I hope people will read this and think twice.

From the OP's link:

[Cahill] said he told the agents he was a government official but never identified himself as the treasurer.

“It didn’t appear to me that they knew who I was nor cared,” he said.
Sounds like 'tude to me. What relevance is it to the custom's officer who Cahill's employer is?

Last time I went through ORD a beagle was sniffing the baggage. It's possible of course that it was relieved from duty since then, because after sniffing on one carry-on bag it decided to lift its leg and pee over it.

But that was the dog's signal that it had found some contraband!

Then the owner didn't understand it :D She disappeared and reappeared with tissue paper to clean up the mess, apologizing profusely... The owner of the carry-on was allowed to leave.

Tongue and cheek.

America doesn't treat people very well in customs or in immigration and treats visitors like criminals. If i get an indifferent response, I consider myself fortunate. Being a citizen doesn't grant any special privileges, let alone being a gov't official.

This is aimed at preventing the spread of non-native pests and blights which can devastate agriculture.

Mr. Cahill should have been aware of these restrictions.

What does the TSA have to do with this?? This guy was probably giving them 'tude and got treated like this because of it.

TSA is a part of DHS. Same "leadership", for TSA and for CBP.

It sounds like the guy is guilty, guilty, guilty, and blaming it on his daughter to boot. What a "peach."

Given how MassPort and some Mass "authorities" treat us regular citizens, I have to laugh about what happened to him.

What goes around comes around.

True, true, but I can't recall what (if any) foreign agricultural pests have utilized international flight pax as vectors. Most, if not all, of these pests (e.g. emerald ash borer) arrived in industrial shipments that weren't screened at all at the POE before being shipped to the point of sale -- not that I'm suggesting that the quarantines should be removed.

Also agree with previous comments about Cahill. Moron!
