Passengers Threatened with Being Placed on No-Fly List for Refusing to Sit in Vomit
One of my key objections to the “no-fly” list was that absent any sort of due process it would get abused no matter how stridently they insisted it would be used ONLY to keep very dangerous terrorists off airplanes. Seems it’s actually terrorists and “anyone we feel like bullying today”.

The pilot was maybe being "a bit" hyperbolic in an attempt to have the folks accept the seats so the flight could leave on time. Because that sort of situation is not how one qualifies to be placed on the FBI's no-fly list. There is a multi-layer review of candidates to be put on the list and then periodic reviews. And the re-dress procedure. Of course, there is more than one list and airlines have their own internal lists of PNG ("pax" non-grata). According to the article, the flight crew is getting a talking-to....

Still, though, it sounds like they didn't want to pay the IDB and tried intimidation tactics.
