Yay for CBSA/ASFC

Although I've come across friendly customs and immigration staff in many countries, even the USA, I was so impressed by CBSA at YVR.
I recently dealt with a CBSA employee for my Nexus renewal "interview." He was like a stereotype of a bored, condescending, bullying customs official.

I was really dreading flying to Canada this time around.
I used the ArriveCAN app, which also required almost zero effort. I think it's unnecessary if you have NEXUS, but I wasn't interested in taking any chances.

I was blown away by how easy and how kind everyone was. I used the NEXUS kiosk, which took five seconds. Since I travel with my dog, I had his rabies vaccine info ready The officer said, "Oh we can do that right now; you don't have to wait in line." He jotted a note on my receipt and welcomed me. No questions. At least three other CBSA officers stopped and waved and to pet the dog. One pretended to "interview" him. ("Are you coming from the United States? Arf? Arf? Woof?") Each one of them smiled and welcomed me. They're probably not allowed to pet the dog, but they all did. (Two TSA agents had done so as well. I know it's forbidden, but they couldn't help themselves.)

I saw several CBSA agents approaching people in the baggage reclaim. They were all cheerful and calm. "Hey. Can I just have a look at your passport? Are you coming here to study? Great! Where are you going to school? Excellent! Good luck in school, okay?"

The sense of kindness and caring was impressive. I always think of the Polish guy who got killed by the RCMP in Vancouver. Clearly, these were polished and helpful people. They seemed to enjoy their jobs and enjoy welcoming people to Canada. I'm so used to the grumbling bureaucrats at Pearson. This was heartwarming. It was like a case study in how to be aware and safe while remaining positive and gracious.
