Holes drilled in luggage (MIA transit)

Hello all, I transited from International to Domestic at MIA (QR to AA).

I got my bags at MIA and gave them to AA after Customs.
Upon landing at my final destination I noticed that one of my two luggages (hard case) had two holes drilled in it.
The holes were say a half a centimeter in diameter. They went through the hard shell of the bag but not all the way through the inside cloth cover.
They are perfectly round holes (as though someone drilled them). There was a red pen/pencil check mark or such near the holes.

The other luggage was fine.
I had food in the luggage (cookies, etc....No meat/cheese).

Unfortunately I did not particularly notice if the holes were there when I received the luggage at MIA.
Nothing was missing from my luggage.

Did not seem that they actually opened my luggage.

Any idea what this could be?

Luckily this was not "expensive" luggage....

No way to be 100% certain but I would suspect an inspection for illegal drugs.

Just an idea.
Could have been done for probing or tracing chemicals or vapors or fumes.
A bad odor was smelled in the cargo hold and they wanted to see if it originated in a piece of luggage.

Ah that sounds possible.

In the end I used strong tape to close the "holes" and still using the bag!

This happened to me as well. When I complained, the US Customs replied that it was because the locks on my case were not TSA approved (this was some time ago).

Happens in Australia when they are testing for drugs - but normally in sight of the passenger. Not heard of it in USA.

Forget it, Jake. It's Miami.
