Dumbest thing security has taken from you?

I believe it's illegal to bring on a plane in China. They don't like flammable liquids on planes--even if it's something we normally do not think of in association with fire. (Booze, hand sanitizer.)

Totally my fault for running late in the first place at DTW, but I had a $5 box of instant cold packs in my bag that TSA ended up running through their secondary screening. We were already at T-15, but the screening took at least 20min. Missed our flight as a result (fortunately rebooked on connecting flight that got us home an hour later).

All within the past 30 months...
PTY-IAD - disposable lighter because the 'US tells us so'.
LHR-OSL - one of two disposable lighters - ''one lighter allowed love'. 'Where is that published?' 'You'll have to find that information yourself'.
IAD-LHR-FRA, transit security during COVID at LHR. Lots of social distancing. Every third bag pulled, including mine, I counted. Those passengers had to stand in a holding pen of sorts until all of the bags with no issues were completed. I got dinged for a lip balm in the UA amenity kit and so much for social distancing!
CAI-BAH, i think. Almost everyone's bags were hand searched at the gate. The agent broke the file off my nail cliipers and handed the cliipers back with a smile.

That's an FAA hazardous material regulation which applies to all regularly scheduled and foreign air carriers (Part 121 and Part 129) operating in or to the United States - 49 CFR 175.10(a)(2).
That's a Heathrow airport policy which is published on their website in the "Security and baggage | Hand baggage and liquids | Everything you need to know" page (under "Banned items).

Re: LHR lighters - thank you for the info (and those were in the liquids bag).

The one lighter rule on your person is a IATA Dangerous Goods by Air regulation. Or at least it was a few years ago when I last checked. I don't have a copy of the 2023 DGR.
Some regulators or individusl airports do have a more stringent no lighter policy though.

Thats right! No lighter allowed to go through security. TSA has decided not to bring a lighter. They began in effect. The rules is still in place. I did see the passenger who brings a lighter. They take it away. I did said Thats right! No lighter allowed. I still remember that one.

A 2-inch allen-wrench in an airport in India. A small bottle of home-made jelly at MSP. A standard-issue camera tripod at DPS. A small electric hair clipper I can't recall where. A prescription shampoo was nearly confiscated at SIN, but I was allowed to take it after I explained what it was and that the shampoo does not come in a smaller size. And, of course, water bottles at various airports.

A miniature souvenir Louisville Slugger baseball bat from my wife at SDF (Louisville, KY). They offered to let us check in a carry-on bag, but we did not want to miss the last SFO BART train to the East Bay -- which we ended doing anyway due to flight delays, and spent the night at the SFO Westin.

I had a set of 6 Tide pods taken at JAX, when I was returning from an Instructors school at FLETC... for TSA.
I literally teach the training for the TSOs, and I was standing there explaining that items under 3.4 in the baggie can go, and the guy just shrugged and said it cant go. Not being one to pull the "do you know who I am" card, I asked to speak with the STSO, who came over and promptly backed up the TSO. I never mentioned I worked for TSA, but I did fill out a comment card, and was contacted by one of the managers from JAX, who apologized and informed me that they had spoken to the individuals involved, and that they had given them remedial training on the 3-1-1 program and what is acceptable and what is not. So, I am appreciative of the contact, but understand a some of the frustration passengers go through first hand.
