Fighters Escort Flight

Military jets scramble to escort Honolulu-bound American Airlines flight after cockpit incident

Two military fighter jets escorted a Honolulu-bound American Airlines aircraft on Friday after a man allegedly tried to break into the cockpit.
Nothing really notable in this story. Guy goes off, tries to breach the flight deck.

Added Lorenzen, "There were some sturdy guys back there that were
helping hold him down."
And once again passengers take action. I think it needs to be said, again, that no amount of TSA security will stop this kind of thing. Passengers continue to demonstrate that they will go down fighting instead of being cargo flown into the side of a building.

The TSA cleared this guy to fly. I'm wondering if he was getting PreCheck.

Not "spotted" by any of the BDO's.

The DHS (who tasks the USAF or ANG to scramble fighters in the first place) just can't admit that the airlines' initiative to harden cockpit doors and to change CONOPS to not cooperate with hijackers has been infinitely more cost-effective than all the pornoscopes, sexual assaults, SPOTNiks and confiscated toothpaste combined.

It was a hard scramble...2 x F-22's...they were there to make sure the aircraft got to it's destination and there were no issues.

They were following protocol after an attempted cockpit breech.

This is very very serious. Waiting for more information and INTEL about what transpired and who the subject is.

To shoot it down it if it looked like somebody took control and was going to crash it into something...

Not serious at all. Some drunk guy went to the rest room and tried to open the wrong door.

No, the job of the fighters are not to make sure the flight gets to its destination. The fighters are there to make sure the aircraft isn't used as a weapon by blowing the airplane and passengers out of the sky if the flight path appears to be threatening.

The actor was taken into custody and questioned. He had been involved in another security issue earlier in the day.

Exactly. The F22 doesn't have a tractor beam.

I know. Post 9-1-1. Their job is to escort the aircraft to it's final destination AND to ensure it does not deviate from it's final destination.

This is reality. This is life.

The actor in question should have the crap beaten out of him for causing so much problems and scaring the crap out of so many innocent people.

Considering he was already under charges for a security incident earlier in the day, maybe you should save some of that beat down for whoever let him on the plane on the first place and let him fly when passengers are saying he looked out of it. Btw, apparently that laptop (read "potential bomb" says DHS honcho Kelly) was handed to him per flight staff.

We have some serious questions to ask about how individuals like this are evaluated after a serious security breach.

It could very well have been an innocent mistake on his part at the airport going through the wrong doors...but when it comes to trying to break open a cock pit door...this is serious business.

Thank god the FA managed to prevent him from doing more harm. He or She should be named and rewarded for his/her bravery.

Passengers help stop this guy. Passengers are the real security in commercial aviation.

edit to add:

An updated story.

http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories...05-20-18-36-45

Halfway through the six-hour flight, the Basdens saw the same man again holding his laptop with something over his head that they thought was a towel or a blanket.

"He was very quiet, moving very sluggish. He was trying to approach the cabin, like where the captain is," said another passenger, Grant Arakelian.

At that point, a flight attendant ran down the aisle with her serving cart and blocked the entrance to first class, said passenger Lee Lorenzen, of Orange County, California.
Before he boarded the flight to Hawaii, Uskanli was also arrested at Los Angeles International airport for opening a door that led onto an airfield ramp, according to Los Angeles Airport police.
I have to question the entire security operations at LAX. Why was this guy not held for several hours in an effort to determine who he was and what was he up to?
