I seriously hope that, if some of the ideas being mooted become true only for EU-US, then a tit-for-tat US-EU measure is put in place that looks remarkably similar to whatever it does look like after John Kelly has shown his cards.

I should have added sane and safe. The laptop ban is idiotic, for a variety of reasons, I'm very happy that the EU is arguing against it. Someone has to stand up to the US.

It's not just the British talking and doing the talking against this. The Germans, the French and the Dutch are amongst those involved heading up against a new/expansion ban of sorts. It will be interesting to see if John Kelly can change the weekly news cycle/narrative for his boss.

The UK are more likely to have seen the actual intelligence that motivated this than the Germans, French or Dutch. Also the UK Prime Minister was previously home secretary and is towards the law-and-order / security / authoritarian end of the political spectrum. She might be expected to be particularly sympathetic to security arguments. An authorised briefing to the media is therefore particularly significant.
I agree with you about what May is.

Next stop: "the Israelis told us (about this threat) and they are right on security", or something like that.
How the narrative keeps getting "fixed".

Someone in the UK has apparently been talking to the newspapers.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017...-eu-officials/
> Senior officials in Whitehall told The Telegraph on Tuesday that the UK security establishment did not believe a laptop ban was justified and were working, alongside European officials, to convince Washington it was unnecessary.
> "We just don't think a laptop ban is justified," the source said, "not for flights from Europe or from the UK."

The "logic" goes like this: Bomb in object X caused accident, thus ban object x.

Sounded more recent than that, with the claims that they were able to integrate explosive material with battery packs, leaving enough battery to function and for this sabotaged device to pass airport scanners, which apparently ISIS has access to.

“Why did you not do something if you knew about the threat to laptop computers from Europe?”
Go figure...

JOINT STATEMENT BY THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION AND DHS ON AVIATION SECURITY COOPERATION
BRUSSELS – Today, European Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship, Dimitris Avramopoulos, and European Commissioner for Transport, Violeta Bulc, hosted a delegation from the United States in Brussels, led by Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security Elaine Duke, to discuss issues related to aviation security and safety.
At the meeting, both sides exchanged information on the serious evolving threats to aviation security and approaches to confronting such threats. Participants provided insight into existing aviation security standards and detection capabilities as well as recent security enhancements on both sides of the Atlantic related to large electronic devices placed in checked baggage.
The United States and the European Union reaffirmed their commitment to continue working closely together on aviation security generally, including meeting next week in Washington D.C. to further assess shared risks and solutions for protecting airline passengers, whilst ensuring the smooth functioning of global air travel.
