I honestly think the bigger problems were going to come when they tried to implement this on a wide scale and the screeners started doing things their way.

We were going to end up with punitive gropes because someone left a BP in their carry-on or some hardnose TSO decided that cash (bills) is paper and ALL paper has to come out.

@AskTSA @TSA @BHMAirport didn't get the memo. Screening books from all carry-ons per FSD, Gail Linkins, direction

None of these reports have been acknowledged on the TSA website, so they are probably all just malicious nothing-burgers.

If it isn't information put out by TSA you know it's unreliable. TSA never lies.

At TSA, lying is at the screener's discretion.

From TSA; "Excuse me sir, we need to search the books in your carry-on"

My bag was pulled by TSA after being x-rayed. The respectful agent said my bag had been flagged because it contained "books". He then opened my bag and paged through my two car repair manuals. He then replaced them and thanked me for my patience.

I thought this was strange, so I searched the internet and found this article... https://www.google.com/amp/www.newsw...9163%3Famp%3D1

It's fairly common. Books are dense and if the Officer can't see "through" an item, whether it is a book or not, your bag gets pulled into secondary.

Best tactic to avoid, still no certainty, is not to stack thick books.

Same with ipads. I got pulled out recently because of two ipads. I said I thought they didn't have to be taken out and he said it was because they were stacked and too dense* to see through. Learned not to stack them from now on.

*The ipads were too dense, not the screener.

in general, if dimensions of the carry-on bag permit, putting thick/dense stuff side by side does good things for weight and balance

Maybe TSA wants us to stop reading books?

I was traveling for work with some bound documents for a client. The titles would definitely set off the alarms of anyone seeing them. So I went to an office supply store on the way home before traveling the next day to get some book covers.

To make it easier for myself to distinguish which booklet was which I used 5 different covers. Needless to day the Thomas the Train and Moana covers got some looks at the client's office but the TSA agent that took a peak inside my bag didn't give a second glance.

When we first traveled to Bali in late '70's we were told to not even consider any magazines or books which showed nudity. The security personnel did look through our magazines and books . Fortunately, Julia Child deboning chicken was not considered porn

If TSA is really only looking for contraband concealed inside the books, then there is no reason they can't perform a thorough search with the books upside down.
