I gotta say though, after coming off a long LHR-CLT flight and finding my onward segment couldn't get pre-check to work, the TSA massage was actually quite relaxing. :D

CNN has now picked it up. It will be interesting if it makes the national network news programs too. Edited to add: Just saw the preview for the NBC Nightly News and it is their lead story.

I wonder how long it will take Blogger Bob to spin the test results.

While these numbers are an embarrassment to the TSA, they will not pass up the opportunity to push for more invasive screening measures.

TSA doesn't need to find weapons and explosives. They knew the red team meant no harm by reading their micro expressions. ;)

The weird thing is that I keep hearing stories (and have some myself) of people accidentally carrying through security pocket knives, paring knives, fireworks(!), and all manners of sharp or explosive items.

But I swear, I never hear of a single person getting a bottle of water accidentally past the check point. If there is one thing TSA has down, it is ferreting out scary bottles of water!

The TSA Blog is irrevelant and nothing but a propaganda machine. Same for the blog team.

A Homeland Security spokesperson said that "the numbers in these reports never look good out of context,
I wonder what context makes a 4% success rate look good.

Yep... You can bet that We, The People, will pay dearly for this.

Yeah, my last flight I carried that TSA-acceptable Letherman tool. Outbound--nobody noticed. Return--nobody noticed. I left something on the plane and had to go back to the gate to retrieve it--finally noticed, I told him what it was but he needed to eyeball it as the X-ray only seeks a block of metal, it can't tell that it's the TSA-safe version.

Yes, it could get worse, more worst and worst. That is problems. They failed to find a gun, weapons, knives, and explosives, as well as boxcutters. No one who taking their own responsibilities. You must passed the aviation security. You have be more responsible. It's your job. It was not TSA/DHS fault.

Should the TSA really be telling the world how bad they're doing?

I actually once — accidentally — brought a full size kitchen knife into a courthouse. (I had it in my bag from a birthday party a couple days before, where it was needed to cut the cake. Just plain forgot that it was there.)

I came in full motorcycle leathers, and my bag got x-rayed by the court's door cop, but I think he was too distracted by my leathers to notice. (IIRC my leathers set off the WTMD and I think he let that pass too.)

I was just there to drop off some papers. Went to get 'em from my bag to hand to the clerk, went  internally when I saw the knife, ignored it, filed, walked out without incident, and put it back in the kitchen when I got home.

Though now that I think of it, I wonder how TSA would deal with someone in full leathers, or one of the various other bulky, hard to remove, semi-metallic full body clothing items. Would being armored (but not armed) be considered a 'weapon'?

And it's get scarierfunnier when you think that the 5% is close to the rate of random selections anyway. Those 5% catches were probably random. Gotta love it.
