The snag seems to revolve not on just security dynamics but substantially about how costs would be shared -- that is who will pay how much for the CBP. The AUH structure of paying for CBP isn't all that attractive to many airports that the CBP desperately wants to sign into CBP PreClearance deals.

I support this move if it is reciprocal - major US airports should have preclearance facilities for Schengenistan (and if the UK wants it, yet another set of facilities for UK bound travel)

It won't be reciprocal unless and until some US airport is willing to pay for that -- and they probably won't be willing to do that.

I wrote it tongue in cheek, I know it won't happen - I just wonder why EUR airports are willing to pay for the "service"

If only the majority of folks understood this to be the real reason why. AUH demonstrated how bad it is and that was with only 6-7 flights per day. Now just imagine LHR on a typical day with 75-100 flights going to the U.S. what CBP processing will be like.

Yeah, unfortunately, AUH is very bad. It's too extremely slow. They didn't have enough staffing.

As for LHR, I think it's right choice for me and they can have US Preclearance facility. If they build another T5D concourse for British Airways & American Airlines. All US bound will be at new T5D instead of other terminals. If they ever to build. it will happens. I have doubt about that. If AA will moved to T5D to be with British Airways. If they have enough rooms.

US Customs Preclearance discussed for YTZ & YQB

That will be nice to have US Preclearance facility at both airports.

Timing is such that the approval and delivery and launch of all these facilities is not yet finalized.

Right, not yet. Just be patient. They will be approved soon or later. Right now, DHS is still ongoing negotiations at foreign airports to build US Preclearance facilities.

Ugh. I much prefer the current process. Unless so.ething changes you have to clear into the US and sit in a holding pen at least an hour before flight. Nothing to do and small.

This announcement now is only for the start of some exploratory discussions. The end result is far from certain. As far as KEF is concerned I am afraid that there are a lot of things working against it. The proportion of connecting passengers is high and the local airlines rely on really tight connections which would by disrupted by the additional time needed for pre-clearance. It is also my understanding that the Americans want most of the cost to be borne by the locals, both for the initial modifications as well as the operating costs. There are only so many Icelandic tax payers and they can't be expected to pay for this.

It's anything but clear that most of these 11 add-ons will even agree to everything to get US CBP Preclearance. What's clear to me is that the vast majority of these 11 airports won't have US CBP Preclearance within even the next 3 (or possibly 4) years. And it could even be longer than that.

How many flights originate or stop over at kef on a typical day? Back 20+ years it wasn't very many.
